Just wondering how i would go about answering this question;
'Explain how marketing is more than just advertising'

I was thinking;
"It is more than just advertising as Marketing comprises of four stages, whereby advertising only falling under one of them; Product, Place or Distribution, Price and Promotion, all these put together make, Marketing."

and i have a feeling i'm way off track..

You're on the right track, but you'll need to expand on the things you've listed for full marks. It's a pretty shallow answer atm.

Marketing is about creating and delivering value to a customer. Customer delivered value is assessed by functional benefits + emotional benefits divided by money costs + time costs + energy costs + physic costs (Kotler, 2007). Advertising is merely a function whereby a customer is made aware of their need or want through a chosen medium. Marketing is a much broader concept.

Ok, so would I start to outline what the four P's are, and say why Marketing falls under Promotion?

Also I thinking if i started to outline the Four P's the answer would be very similar to a previous question i answered. "Outline the Four P's that make up the Marketing Mix"..

Then perhaps make the focus of your answer on establishing the relationship between marketing and advertising; that is, that one is a subset of the other. In the process though, define marketing, list its components, define advertising, and then conclude by establishing the relationship. That should be fine.
