for arguments sake, lets say someone is getting C's (your typical average student) all year long, can they still get a study score of 40+ if they do really well on the exam?

It all depends on the rank not there grades in the year if you get Cs all year and you're ranked 1 and get near full or full marks on the exam then you'll get a 50. If you're ranked low in an average class then it would be a lot harder but you can still get 40+ if you slay the exam.
