Model UN Conference

My friend and I have always wanted to do a model UN, so when the school asked for people to go do one, we signed up.

Anyway, we've realised we probably have to put a lot of work into preparation and stuff but we've never done one of these before and have no idea where to start.

Apparently they're giving us a country in about a week, but we have to fill in a survey and put down countries we want before then.

So has anyone done one of these before and have any tips on which countries are good to have and what to do as your 'research' once you've actually got one?

Also, what happens on the day?

We're pretty lost at the moment, but we really want to do this :)

EDIT
They have this on their website, so it gives us an idea, but nothing specific yet:
Rotary MUNA simulates the workings of the UN Assembly. Teams of two students from Year 11 (preferably) represent a nominated UN Country. Students are given topics well in advance. Resolutions cover issues such as Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights, Nuclear Proliferation, Poverty, Terrorism and World Peace. Delegates must research the topics and be able to express the views of the countries they are representing and not their own and not Australia’s. They are encouraged to wear an appropriate costume and have fun doing it. The objective is to encourage young people to learn respect and tolerance for people of all races, religions and nationalities.

VCE: English, Health, Legal, Psych, Further, Chem
2015: Arts/Law @ Monash

Guys I only doubled with Arts because I couldn't let go of Psych and wanted to keep doing it as a major at least, but I took International Studies on a whim after the info session just because I needed a minor, and I love it so much! It's 3:29am and I had to share this, I think I'm majoring in it bye.

Hey! I'm about to start a MUN club at my school actually, and will also be attending this event - if you're feeling nervous, don't worry, model un is a lot of fun! It's a bunch of meeting new people, testing out your public speaking skills....aaah it's just amazing.

But a quick checklist of what you should do before a MUN is available at the UNYOUTH website - they run a lot of Model UN conferences and competitions throughout the year and are always a good resource - http://www.unyouth.org.au/programs/evatt/how-to-win/

Also you should check out bestdelegate - it's an online database of MUN tips, political documents, etc.

Btw..what's your name? We should meet up at the MUNA! :)
