Hey guys not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but i thought some fellow uni of Melbourne commerce students could help me out here

So Im in my second year and to be honest i havent been doing very well (i failed a subject) and have been getting really average marks (literally just passing) (i havent been taking uni very seriously)

Anyway, ive become aware that i need to start looking for an internship. How does this work? What is the process? What am i meant to do? Where do i apply? Do i need one? I literally have no idea about how this works i was wondering if anyone could help me out here? Im starting to get really stressed/anxious about this :/
(i also have no friends so its hard for me to ask anyone in real life :( )

Hi I'm also a Bcom student, but I'm in my first year.

There is seriously no reason to get stressed out over this, you're only in your second year. I would suggest talking more about this to the Commerce student centre or even Unimelb careers. I'm sure that you can also make appointments to talk about these things. Also using google to search various sorts of vacation work can help you get an idea of what sort of available jobs/work there are out there. :)

Have a lookhere and have a look at what's still open. I think you may be a bit late for big 4, but see whats out there.

All of the big 4 apart from EY have rolling applications, so just google them and all the details will be there.

Hey. 3rd year Bcom student here.

Vac Program is basically an internship role for a certain business line over the summer holidays; you get a snapshot of what it feels like to work in a professional environment doing actual work in your business line.  Look out for any Vacation Programs, hopefully for Big 4/Large Mid-tier accounting firms. Application for vac programs are quite competitive, online application, then a series of interviews, then an Assessment Centre, then finally a partner interview. The advantage of getting into one is that they will automatically consider you to join their Graduate Program, among other advantages. Some firms don't even open up for Grad Program applications; their Vaccies already filled up the role. Good luck! It's gonna give you a better chance of being offered a grad program.

This is not to say that not getting into a Vac program kills your chance of getting into a Grad program. I was rejected for many Vac Program applications, but I got a Grad Program offer for next year.  :D

Anyway, cheers!

Thanks for the detailed response and thanks to the other responses ITT

So, you didn't do an internship? Just with the vac programs, when should you apply for them?

Is there any negatives of doing vac programs/internships during third year/end of third year?
2013 - BBus Monash
2014 - BCom Melb

Vac applicants can apply in the Feb-April months, some also go up to June-July. Just keep an eye out for important dates. Gather all the companies you know, look at their websites, it should be there (if they have a vac program).

Vac programs are usually done in the summer holidays before third year. But if you're talking about internship while studying, there's not much negatives really, just time management I reckon. There are part-time 6-month/12-month internships. Grab every opportunity.

Should i book an appointment with unimelb careers or commerce student centre?

It wouldn't hurt to seek help in writing cover letters and resumes. :)

Other Big 4, like KPMG, EY, and Deloitte. Big mid-tier firms like BDO and Grant Thornton. You may look into the Big 4 Banks. Retail - Woolies, Coles, Aldi. FMCGs like P&G, Unilever, Nestle, RB. Also, many other professional services firms, private companies, and investment banks like Crowe Horwath, McGrath Nichol, Moore Stephens, Korda Mentha, RSM Bird Cameron, Telstra, Shell, Chevron, BP, IBM, BHP, Lend Lease, Citi, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs....and many others. There are a LOT of companies offering vac programs. Good luck!
