I have just been wondering, if you do ok in a subject, can a low class average pull your mark down because of moderation? My methods score last year was 31 :P but the class average was only 26. I know that moderation can pull your mark down or something, but how exactly does it work? My teacher reckons that I should have gotten at least a 32 or 33 if the average was closer to 30. My class was the worst that my teacher every had. The highest mark was 33 and somone who got 97/100 for schoolwork (class average of 80/100) only got 32. Our sac and exams marks did not correclate well.

My schoolwork mark last year was 92/100 (89% average), which would have been an A+. I only got a B+. Is it becuase I only got C+ and B for the two exams? I did rather badly. I made a lot of small mistakes. I can do the maths but working out what to do form a worded questions screws me up. Even after doing 32 practice exams!

Sounds like your school has VERY easy SAC's for your sac mark to be brought down from 92/100 to (61-74)/100. But SAC moderation depends on your RANKING in your cohort.

A class average does not (necessarily) affect your moderated SAC mark, it is your ranking and the matching exam mark to that ranking that influences it.  Due to this reason as well your exam marks of C+ and B would not have affected your moderated SAC mark.

Basically if you are ranked Xth in your cohort, your moderated SAC mark will be (roughly) equivalent to the Xth best exam score from YOUR cohort.

I dont know how well I did in the school, but I was ranked 3rd in my class. So, basically, a low class SS does not drag yours down?

Yes, a low class average would not bring your SS down. It is all about your ranking in the cohort that influences it.

How exactly does it get modified in detail? is there any infomration about it?  How does you ranking in the cohort effect it exactly? I just want to be clear. :)

Without statistical moderation, my understanding of the system is like this:
Say student A was ranked first, B was ranked second, C was ranked third. If student A got 70% for the exam, B got 80% for the exam, and C got 90% for the exam, of course they would maintain those as their exam marks (these do NOT change). However, for SAC marks, and I repeat, without statistical moderation, since student A was ranked first, student A would get the first ranked EXAM score as their SAC score; so, 90%. This keeps working so B inherits back his/her own exam score as a SAC score as he/she was ranked second in both the SAC and exam rankings, and C would take A's exam score as his/her SAC score since he/she was ranked third for SACs, and A was ranked third for the exam. Statistical moderation will affect the exact raw SAC scores obtained in the end, but this is a rough guide. Hence, as long as you maintain consistency on the exam, you won't be affected by a weak cohort at all. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here of course...this is just what I vaguely remember from an initially broken understanding).

This may or may not help. The process is not something VCAA publishes often as the majority of people would not understand the mathematics involved. The information in the post below was presented at a VCE coordinators meeting last year.

Hmm.... htat is a rather odd way of doing it. It does make sense, but It does really seem to be rather unfair to those who always do well in SAC's for Maths/Physics and worse on the exams as I run out of time...... :-\
