Oh, hahah. This is why I study science and not linguistics. :P

It's fantastic, I'm absolutely loving it! Great atmosphere, great people, great courses, whacky lecturers. Great place, if Melbourne falls through, you should come here. ;)

Since we're on the VTAC discussion I wanted to ask a question.
As are many, (I for one am) doing the UMAT in two days, how does the result affect your VTAC preference? Like how does the whole gist work?

Thanks.

Just put in your preferences as you would regardless of your UMAT performance. Your UMAT result won't affect your preferences in any way, and you won't have to change anything around if you don't want to once you find out how you did. You'll find out about interviews in late December (for Monash at least)

I can understand anxiety coming into this, but take a few deep breaths and try to not let it get to you - it's all very clear, straightforward, and your careers councillor can help you through the whole thing.

I also have documentation set up from various doctors/specialists courtesy of my mother.

You may have to see them again - to memory, they might have needed to sign specific forms. There is definitely a coversheet you need to send it in with. Alternatively, you can get your doctors/specialists to sign something online about it all, which means you won't have to send anything in.

Is is merely a means of improving your chances for a certain course (even though it does explicitly reference that "there are no guarantees with SEAS due to the competitive environment")? Or, can it actually enhance your ATAR slightly, as indicated by the Monash SEAS calculator?

From what I'm aware of the system, your ATAR won't actually increase, just that you'll be eligible for courses with a higher ATAR depending on the "severity" of your issues. (severity used extremely loosely - issues are issues, not really fair to give them a numerical value of how "bad" they are)

How long does this take? Do I have to apply for different universities? Do I have to write a huge thesis on my hardship which I don't necessarily want to revisit in the slightest?
This is the beauty of VTAC - it is a one size fits all (except I think for scholarships, you have to apply to some unis directly, but VTAC warns you about this a bajillion times, so you won't miss it) system. You won't get told of if you were successful or not, or how much you'll be getting out of it (unless I just missed that message last year...).

You will have to write about your hardship, but given the nature of it, you might be alright if you have your specialist detail the whole thing for you - they can then include in this write-up that you did not give them information because of emotional trauma. However, if you can, it would be best if you could write something light about it in your own statement (as everything you apply for, you'll need to give your own statement as well as a specialists).

Does being the recipient of any type of centrelink benefit make you eligible for the disadvantaged financial background section of access melbourne? or is there an amount that you need to be receiving from centrelink to qualify. For example, my family receives family tax benifit A. does this mean that i qualify for the section or is there a chance that i still might not

thanks!

Centrelink benefits do count as disadvantaged financial background however I'm unsure which amount is eligible, I presume all?

ftb:a means you qualify. All you need to do is qualify for a centrelink payment and you're okay. I also remember reading that when you do the SEAS application VTAC can just pull the details from centrelink so you don't have to provide any documentation. Don't count on that though.

yep, all.

You'll apply in the disadvantaged financial background section, and they'll specifically ask if you or anyone in your family receives either family tax benefit A or youth allowance. You'll tick yes, and then they'll ask for this person's CRN. To memory, you don't need to mail them any documentation - but they will tell you about it if you do.

By being financially disadvantaged, you not only qualify for Access Melbourne, but also their guaranteed entry pathways.

I have a long-lasting rash-looking area and eczema, but it's hardly affected my education; only on a few occasions that they've been mildly itchy i.e. during a SAC. Can I still state this on my SEAS application as part of the medical criteria, assuming I can get the necessary documentation for it? I've stated likewise upon applying for VTAC, does this still count? If not, how do I change it on there?

Also, does bullying also count as a mental condition (not so much me), despite not having a specialist during that time? I know many students have suffered from it, but not seen any specialists.

No offence, but surely SEAS wouldn't allow something as minor as these things...

Not sure. I've been told to apply with anything you can for SEAS and scholarships by teachers, as a back up, but hey... each to their own.

Yeh it's good to apply for whatever you can but if it's hardly effected your education then it isn't eligible for SEAS, SEAS is for people who have had their education impacted e.g. Messy divorce.

I actually think you might be able to get away saying you had a bad rash and getting some extra points if a doctor backs it up.

They probably won't accept bullying though if a doctor hasn't dealt with it. As there would probably be no independent evidence to back up the claim without a doctor or similar.

And on the topic of this once again...

I suffer from a myraid of mental disorders, but only one of them has been diagnosed (eating disorder, which qualifies for section whatever, I think it's 2?). For my undiagnosed one, I've had doctors and specialists say to me "Yes, you're definitely developing bipolar, however as there's no medication which is suitable for U18s, we won't diagnose you just yet".

How do I approach these problems, in your opinion?
