hi, im in year 12 and ive always had a problem in clarity and expression, and my last sac result was basic because of my lack of clarity and expression, I was wondering does anyone have useful tips or exercises to improve clarity and expression?

Thank you  :)

Plan!

Plan, plan, plan, plan, plan! I cannot stress this enough - taking 15 minutes out of writing time to make a good plan helped me wonders (clearly I am showing my clarity here ;P )

My plans consist of my contention, each topic that the paragraph will be about (not so much topic sentence), and examples - even just "hutu/tutsi rwadna genocide --> consequences of not doing x,y,z". I used to get marked down on clarity and expression and just adding in planning has helped boost my mark tremendously.

In addition to this, picking up a good vocab is key - make sure you know the nuances of each word. Reading helps, but for the cheats way, there's some good sheets scattered about the forum - checking in the sections for Language Analysis is your best bet, as the descriptor words for tone can often be added in for clarity in your context/text response essays.

And just practice, generally, but that's always the answer ;P Good luck!!

My thoughts on this:
1. develop a vocal list specific to the part of the course you are currently studying
2. Do not substitute big words into your writing for the sake of using big words. Doing this usually results in the word not being used in the right way and consequently, the point you are trying to make to your reader gets lost.
3. As marsbareater12 said, planning is so important. It helps to you break down the task and clarify your own thoughts on the topic, prompt or article, so these come across clearer in your piece.
4. Practice writing a lot and get your teacher to give you feedback! I find my first practice pieces before the SAC always suck in terms of my clarity, and then improve  :)

Swift observed: "Proper words in proper places".

Proper words - Did you use the right word (look to context)? Is there a simpler word which conveys the same meaning? If there is, always use the simpler word.

Proper places - Are the words placed in their proper places? Touch up on your grammar.

Always ask yourself what each word is doing in your sentence. Does it add to meaning? If it does not, take it out. Avoid flowery adjectives, use short sentences, and be direct. Try to use the active voice more.
