There will be a proper (read: hella long) post explaining all this soon-ish (read: before school starts, hopefully) but basically the changes are as follows:
- No more context
- New compulsory creative SAC
- Text comparative section that replaces context on the exam using one of the pairs of texts on pg 6 of this thing.
- The oral SAC has gone from being 20% of Unit 3 to 50% of Unit 4 -.-
- Language Analysis is a bit more argument-based and a bit less techniques-based.

Unfortunately VCAA have mostly chosen awful texts or text combinations, though pairs 3, 5, and 8 look okay. And there are a bunch of repeated texts that have either been on the English or Lit lists before (even very recent ones like Stasiland) or texts by the same author as other texts on the list (eg. Margaret Atwood, Jhumpa Lahiri, etc.) but that's a rant for another time...

hey lauren,

Do you know, how exactly, the percentage is divided in year 12 English? and what sort of assesments aer there (langauge analysis, creative SACs etc..)?

Thanks  :)

Yep, so there are three outcomes (GA1 = SACs in Semester 1, GA2 = SACs in Semester 2, and GA3 = the exam)

So the percentages below apply to each outcome:
GA1 --> 1 analytical Text Response essay = 30%
       --> 1 creative piece based on a different text to the above = 30%
       --> 1 Language Analysis piece = 40%

GA2 --> 1 Comparative Text Essay (idk what the official name for this is yet) = 60%
       --> 1 Persuasive oral = 30%                               {thought that was 50% all up but it's only 40%, whoops!}
                + a written explanation about that oral = 10%

GA3 --> 1 Text Response essay = 33%
       --> 1 Comparative Text Essay = 33%
       --> 1 Language Analysis piece = 33%

Hope that makes sense! Again, more detailed guides for all of these are pending :)

That's only thing, I am going to worry about throughout the whole year  :P

I like how the oral is essentially worth a fifth of your study score in the new study design and it's not even tested in the end-of-year exam. Classic VCAA move.

@Syndicate: Pick up debating. You'll thank me later.

1/5?!!!! really? 10 ss?
That isn't exactly how it works (it's not 10 study score points). It is simply worth 2/5 of GA2, and GA2 and GA1 combined are worth half your final study score. However, this is subject massively to your SAC scaling. One way of considering it is that, in reality, the exam is worth more than 50% (assuming this doesn't change in 2017).

I tried debating once in Year 9 (massive fail)
It's so fun! You'll find the oral a breeze if you practise your oratory skills. If not, it's not really a huge loss.

Good luck for today! I did my bio experiment yesterday and have Part 2 of the SAC tomorrow - answering the discussion questions. I'm excited but nervous!

Yup definitely, I used to always be on top of my work and now I am struggling to keep up. It's mainly the spesh and methods because we cover a topic every lesson unlike in year 10 where we would finish a topic in 2-3 lessons and they would give us time to do the homework in class.

It's so relieving to hear this! It feels that no matter how many hours I am putting in I still can't feel completely at ease and confident in all my subjects as I could last year.  :(

I actually felt that year 11 is so much chiller hahah or was it just me? But I'm getting a little lonely at times when everyone is studying but I'm not ._.
