Chem or business management?

Hey guys so I'm going into year 11 next year and I don't know if I should do chemistry or business management.
I have no idea what I want to do when I graduate. I loved year ten business and did really well so I want to continue it. However chem is needed quite often. I didn't particularly like chemistry this year due to the shit teacher I had, however the vce chem teacher is amazing and I've heard vce chem is different. So I sorta want to give it another go.
My other subjects are English, methods, GMA, bio, and 3/4 psych.
Which one should I do?
Thanks :)

i reckon you should do chem. You are right in the fact that it's many pre requisites and you should do chem 1/2 because 3/4 builds on from 1/2, a bit like methods. i rather be safe and do chem because if you don't like it and won't need it, in year 12 you can pick up business management again, apparently it's a subject where you don't really need 1/2 because the content is easy enough. It's better than not doing chem and realizing that you need it when year 12 comes around and without 1/2 is pretty tough, let alone having done 1/2. Remember, year 11 is sort of an experimental year so if you end up doing horrible or don't like it, as i've said, then drop it or pick up something else in year 12.

Well... you have three options as I see it and my biased opinion isn't really going to help you, as I don't know you personally.
Options:
  • You do Business Management
  • You do Chemistry
  • You try something else (I'd say Accounting to compromise.)

Try asking yourself these questions:
  • What would you like to pursue? Where is your future? (A bad idea is to do Chemistry, hate it and not need it at all.) I know you don't know where it is, but surely you know your local tertiary institution enough to know that you dislike some subjuects and courses.
  • What do you like more?
  • Are you ready for the workload? (Chemistry is more demanding than Business Management, I hear, but I don't do BM, so hm...) From my experiences, Chemistry requires a lot of time and effort, but I do find the content to be somewhat interesting. In Units 1/2, the basic groundwork is done, and Unit 3/4 really builds on top of it, so if you don't like Unit 1, it's not going to be the greatest idea to continue. It's easy to think you need more time to study it properly. I'd advise you to check up the Study Design to see whether you think it's your thing or not.
  • Do you feel that you could do well in Chemistry?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • Do you want a break from your Maths/ Science focused course? You have a reasonably Maths-oriented course there, so is BM going to be your break or Chemistry to continue and be more analytically involved?

Ultimately, it's up to you to choose.

I would say do Chemistry. I did Business Management Unit 1 and quit for Physics.
2014: Psychology
2015: English | Methods | Chinese SL | Specialist | Physics

2016: Bachelor of Commerce - The University of Melbourne

I disagree with all above saying do Chemistry. From what you've described, you enjoy Business which is something you should adopt in VCE. Now, remembering that Units 1/2 don't contribute to the ATAR... You could try it out at Year 11 and see whether or not it's right. If you don't like it, move to something else.

It's a tricky situation because at this point in time, Uni pre-requisites do play a part in deciding your VCE subjects. Then again, you could always do some sort of bridging subject at uni if chemistry is really needed.

Now i'm not saying focus on pre-reqs and decide straight away what your future course will be, because that would be a bad suggestion. In the end, you're most likely going to score higher in a subject that you like (and are good at for that matter) as opposed to something you're doing just for the sake of it.

My suggestion: Business Management (provided you haven't made up your mind on a course that has Chemistry as a pre-requisite).
