Dr He exam

I was wondering what I would need to know for the Dr He examination if I want to get into mathematical methods 1 and 2. Do I need to have an understanding of methods concepts or is it like AMC.

It's definitely more like mathematical problem solving similar to maths competitions. If you have any awards from competitions (Melbourne Uni maths / AMC High distinction) you can get a place without having to do the exam.

Just wondering, but any reason why you want to go to Dr He?

I like challenge and having lots of competition, so I think that doctor He will suit type of learning style. I knew that the exam would be problem solving, but I was wondering if it included methods concepts in the problem solving or it it like AMC simple questions worded trickily. BTW This year us the first time I have done AMC, so I don't think I will get a high distinction when I get my results :'(. Thanks

Dr. He focuses on the fundamentals of mathematics which can sway from the syllabus at times. However, his teachings do help you develop a different mathematical approach to problems and the competition is quite nice as well. Although many people don't prefer his style of teaching, I definitely endorse his course and on the basis of your interests, I think you will too.

It's fine if you don't achieve a HD for AMC, just do moderately well on the test (from memory, it's 40% for maths methods 3,4 and higher for methods 1,2). The test had an assortment of methods problems but was more based on AMC styled MC questions (they are moderately difficult but not as arduous as the last 5 questions). I would advise revising non-routine calculus, logarithms and algebra but dedicating most of your revision for practice AMC questions.

Good luck :)

It's getting easier and easier to get into DHMC. The number of students dropping out lately have been astronomical.

A distinction should be able to get you into DHMC now. I know a few friends who got in on credits so i'm sure you'll be fine!

I can't really put an exact reason as to why but the general consensus is that Dr He has kinda become worse over time. He uses the same notes every year and while it is challenging, he doesn't really help with VCE since the people who go there are normally really good to begin with, and you'd basically never see some of the problems Dr He teaches on the Methods Exams.

The general declining quality of students as well as the fact that his classes are often at the worst times (Friday evening) in crowded classrooms makes it not worth it for many. A few years ago, all his classes were full and there was a waiting list, nowadays, its not uncommon to see unfilled seats in his classes.

But that isn't to say that Dr He isn't any good; he's still one of the few tutors that really extends your mathematical knowledge and his accent and common expressions are pretty hilarious

His results are pretty good, but it doesn't serve as a testament to how superb he himself is.

A good teacher should be able to make the mediocre, 50th percentile students shoot into the 80th percentile, not make the 95th percentile students hit 97.

And Dr He doesn't let you use a calculator in his classes (bad habit) which I find a significant detriment in subjects like methods. My use of the calculator is extraordinarily limited (it has hindered me in exam 2 prac exams so far).

I missed out on AMC this year :(
anyone know how his entrance exam compares to the difficulty of AMC questions? Like in the seniors warm-up sheets?

The asteroid problem set me thinking a bit, but I solved it :)

btw is there any place I can find actual AMC past papers? Google doesn't seem to help much
