Help with language analysis

I have a language analysis due soon and I a struggling because I can't work out the tone or arguments of the piece that I have to analyse. Can anyone give me some tips on how to work out the tone and the arguments the writer is trying to put across and how to structure a language analysis piece. It's only the second time I have ever written one  :-[
