All About Eve

Hi everyone,

I needed a hand with one of my text response essays. I picked the question ''All About Eve' demonstrates that women must make difficult choices if they are to have successful careers'.
I was able to come up with two possible ideas. I was thinking of having Eve as a focus in one paragraph and Margo as the focus in the other, but I'm stuck on the third one. I had thought of doing Ms. Caswell but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to pull that much information from it. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.  :)

It's possible that you could do a paragraph on Karen and say how she isn't successful as she is just a playwrights and doesn't have a successful career because she hasn't had to do anything difficult in her life. You could also mention Claudia in this paragraph if there isn't enough to talk just about Karen :)

Assessors and teachers generally prefer students to avoid doing "character" themed body paragraphs in the exam and instead explore a particular theme or an idea in which you can then refer to the characters as your examples and evidence.

I haven't done the essay topic, but a central idea you could talk about in one of your body paragraphs is how women in the theatre must sacrifice their own "human" qualities (like femininity) to succeed as they are consumed by their own ambition in pursuing glory and stardom. Most prominent example is through Eve's actions. You could also relate to the sacrifice of their own personal identity in order to become a different "persona"; someone significant and standout as they themselves are not. The latter you can make links to the characteristics of the theater environment. Lastly, also talk about the actual women's role or more specifically their influence in the theater world where in most cases especially through Eve; they are reliant on the authority of men in order to promote their stardom.

This is just my take on it so feel free to disagree and have a counter-point :) This is a good thing because you are forming your own interpretations of the film.

Thank you for your help Loza. I had considered doing that but then strayed away cause I wasn't sure I would be able to writer enough about them. I ended up writing a paragraph on whether Eve's difficult decisions made her truly successful or whether it was just a kind of superficial success.

Thanks Saikyo too. I seem to struggle on writing text response essays sometimes by focusing on the themes instead. I might rewrite my essay and incorporate some of your ideas.

Thanks guys.  :)
