I got in for year 9 entry, where all I had to do was the exam and place in the top 5% in the school.

In my cohort, they took in around 20 students for year 11 entry.

Year 11 entry may be a bit more competitive or may be less depending to which school you to. For me, more because my old school wasn't that strong.

Just make sure your general numeracy and literacy skills are strong. Learn more vocabulary, because it will help you with the verbal reasoning aspect.

For the essay writing section, practice under the time constraints. Markers don't expect masterpieces in 15 minutes, the most important thing is that your language sounds free flowing and natural.

Lastly if you get through the exam, you have interviews. Although I didn't have to do interviews to get in during year 9, I have done interview for scholarships and accelerated classes. A few of my friends did interviews for principal's discretion and they were with the assistant principal. Just have a good reason for why you really want to go to Macrob (eg. academically challenging environment, like minded people etc.), and mention special achievements (sport, music, leadership, anything else unique).

Don't quote me on this but I don't think that Year 11 entry for MHS/Mac Rob has an actual test incorporated into it. I think it's an application and an interview you have to go through :).

Edit: Sorry there is a test for Mac Rob, it's different at MHS

No Mac.Rob has an actual test (it's different for MHS which is a good thing I reckon)

Hi, would anyone be able to tell me if it is worth trying to get into Macrob in the last year of VCE (year 12- 2016) ?
Please list the pros and cons! This is very important to me and i currently go to one of the other two selective entry schools [nossal/cory] but i live very far away and going to Macrob would be easier but at the same time i would feel embarrassed to get in so late. I've tried since year 8 to get into Macrob but missed my chances by a little each time.
Please reply asap! Thank you heaps :)

It's worth having a shot since you have nothing to lose, but don't make that your focus instead of schoolwork. I'm sure the quality of education you would get at Nossal/Cory will be similar to Mac Rob :).

Really? That's interesting, I always assumed that Mac Rob had excellent teachers in addition to a highly talented cohort. Given that SCHS and Nossal are quite young, wouldn't it be logical to assume that Mac Rob, at least for now, would provide a better education, since developing an all-star teaching cast takes time?

Well I can't dispute that, because obviously Mac Rob will be superior due to the history they have and their experienced teachers. But still, the teaching quality of Nossal/Cory will be far better in comparison to many public schools across the state, so if she doesn't get in she will still be at a great school.

People who haven't experienced selective/independent school teaching assume that the teaching is always world-class.

Unfortunately for us, there's a substantial number of subpar teachers in these schools (no names are mentioned because teacher quality is subjective to a degree, but I can assure you such is the case). The biggest reason that schools like Macrob/MHS succeed is because they have students who are driven to do well and most of them seek out tutors to bolster their learning. In the end, while teachers are very important to a students' learning, it's really down to the student, and that's where selective schools shine.

If you're saving time by going to Macrob, go for it, but if you already like the environment you have at your school, don't risk it and stay there (i've changed schools 5 times in a 12 year span of education, and I can definitely say that there are massive environmental shifts from school to school).

Hi everyone,

what kind of standard will they be expecting for mathematics at a year 10 level going onto year 11 maths. Will we be expected to know the basics of mathematical methods?
