Exam 2 methods and spesh

How would one go about prioritising their time during the fifteen minute reading time, and then writing time? I always find that I run out of time for methods and spesh, having to guess a few multiple choce questions.

I usually spend my reading time, looking straight away at the short answer, and if theres time left I go to the multiple choice. And when writing time starts I usually go to the short answer, and go back to multiple choice, but find I run out of time on some questions, so I have to guess.

What are some useful strategies that you guys use to maximise reading and writing time? And How do be able to think quickly and do questions without making stupid mistakes? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Answer some of the easier multiple choice in reading time (particularly the ones where it's like, "this graph has equation:", or you don't need a calculator at all). Then, when reading time starts, immediately put those multiple choice answers on your answer sheet, and THEN jump to short answer.

Oh.

So you recommend doing short answer first? Then multiple choice? Why?

Quite simply - the marks. :P

Multiple choice is worth 44 marks - even then, that's only to make the numbers easier for VCAA. Extended response, though, is worth 116 marks. So, 72.5% of your exam is extended response, and you can't guess those answers (unless you're the luckiest person alive and guess the right working...). In contrast, only 27.5% of your exam is multiple choice, and you could guess every single one of those questions if you run out of time.

Logistically speaking, it's in your favour to do extended response first.

I prefer to do the exam in order. I usually spend around 20-25 minutes on multiple choice, then 70-90 minutes on the short answer. Any time left is to check over the exam.

I'd tend to do the exam in order too. I spend reading time quickly glancing at extended response and which questions are on which topic, then aim to knock out 5 or 6 MC questions. Spend then 25-30 min on MC, and the rest on ER and checking. Have to be disciplined enough just to stop multiple choice without having finished them if I go over 30 minutes though, just to make sure I have enough time left for ER.

I choose to do MCQ first so I get into the rhythm of things (so I feel confident and all) but I'll only do half of them before going onto extended response before going back to finish MCQ after I finish Extended response (unless I get into a mind blank then I go back to MCQ).

During reading time, I go through each extended response question and mentally note what technique I would use to solve for that question and any one I don't know, I put on hold before I close the book and picture the problem in my head to see if I can figure out anything and if I can't, then look through MCQ :)
