Lit Exam Discussion
« on: November 07, 2014, 03:15:14 pm »
How were the passages? Were you inspired by infinite variety and an invincible summer, or were you a boat against the current, now depending on the kindness of strangers?
^don't think those books are on the Lit list anymore, but oh well...

Discussion below!

What a coincidence I actually used the phrase "infinite variety" in one of my essays!
Hahaha, I wrote essays on Antony and Cleopatra and Seamus Heaney's poetry.
Neither had amazing passages but I still managed to pull through
The feeling of relief when you walk out of the exam room though!  ;)

I was very happy with the passages for both of my texts. Woop! For Rich it was Ideal Landscape, the first two Twenty One Love Poems and the first half of North American Time.

I definitely wrote more than I normally do so that was surprising lool.

Oh yeah, forgot about that one, haha.
How were the Ant&Cleo passages, seeing as us lucky '13ers stole the barge scene :)

Urgh, I wanted Ideal Landscape last year, there's so much in that one! I'm surprised they picked two excerpts from larger poems,  but hopefully that opened things up more :)

Pygmalion Passages very easy ( The ones you expected are the ones that came up    ;))
Persuasion could have been better as they were very short, but overall they were manageable.
Wrote loads more than usual and finished right on time.

They weren't the greatest, passage one was on Antony and octavia's marriage, passage two was the scene where Cleopatra betrayed Antony and he got defeated, third was the discussion between Cleopatra and Dolabella about her fate

So all in all, these passages mostly concentrates on Antony (even in passage three)

Goddamn first year texts are so predictable  ;)
It's probably better that you were writing right till the end; nothing worse than sitting there for a few minutes with not enough time to change anything but enough time to convince yourself you did everything wrong :P

Hmm... that's odd. At least there weren't any bizarre Aggripa or Proculeius passages that have nothing to do with anything.
They were probably trying to trip you up by having Antony-centric passages that didn't actually feature him talking or on-stage, so you did well to pick that up! :)

Yes that is true! I was quite thrown off but it could have been way worse :)
Overall I'm pretty happy with the Exam. So glad I've completed lit, YAY!

TS Eliot had great passages. The Tempest didn't.

Anybody do Jane Eyre? How'd you find it?
TS Eliot had great passages. The Tempest didn't.
Did The Waste Land make an appearance? 2013 wrecked my theory that they'd give us a different section each year, ignoring Death By Water.

Antony and cleopatra was alright -ish , it wasn't the best pick though , I think the 2013ers got the best passages - oh the barge she sat in !
Persuasion passages were , let's say weird ,  like I was expecting more extravagant scenes ( like when captain wentworth takes the child of her back , or the walk scene where she's hiding behind the trees and listening to his conversation with Louisa) alas , no profound scenes were there , except the last passage which seemed ok. And most of all no mr Elliot !!!!!
So that's my rant about the passages , did anyone feel the same way about persuasion ?

Feeling really down atm  :'(

Thought I handled The Tall Man passages quite well, they were quite lengthy and similar and initially I struggled finding points of contrast between the passages but I managed to write around 6-7 pages- much more than I typically write!

Rich poetry, however... LOVE Ideal Landscape, did a practice analysis on it two nights ago and had a funny feeling it would be on the exam... but I totally messed up North American Time  :-\ I'm really anxious atm so can someone please tell me how bad this sounds: I didn't make any links to exterior poems  :-[ I annotated links but it flew right past me as I was writing, time became my enemy and I was really frantic in those last 10 minutes.. If I did well on ideal landscape though, could I still get say 13 or so out of 20 for the essay? How hard would it be to get a 36 SS if I got a B+ and A+ in GA 1, 2 respectively? Sorry for such an incoherent rant, I'm just really upset atm.

Rhapsody on a Windy Night, Ash Wednesday (Section III) and Journey of the Magi.

Really great selection, so many different ways to write on them.
