If you like the subject, continue with it. If not, do mainstream English instead.

In terms of lectures, this year I went to VATE lecture and that was it. It was alright, not great but the essay section was the best one. I'm not sure about Connect Education but it may be good.

Hi there!

English Language is like a science. You dissect the language from a practical viewpoint, and work out how things are said, why they are said, and what are the implications. The fact you like it will definitely help you in getting a good score, as for a subject you like, you will naturally improve with work and effort. To help you with your journey, I have attached some notes to get you started for next year! I have also attached my success tips. If you have any other queries, just message me :)

Thank you Dmitri! :)
I've started memorising the glossary of Mastering Advanced EL- is that a bad idea?
Would you recommend any books that you enjoyed reading/are helpful?
Also- what are some things to do over the summer holidays which would help me?
apparently next year i need to spend 20hr/week on eng lang :/

anyway, thank again! your help is really appreciated :)

Not a problem at all :)

Over the holidays I would just familiarise yourself with all the key metalinguistic terms and the rest will be covered in your classes. Essentially you should be studying the subsystems and the relevant metalinguistic terms under each. For example Lexicology -> Word Classes. When I tutor students, I always start off with teaching them the metalinguistic terms... trust me you do not want to be learning it a few days before the end of year exam.

This will help you with all the sections in the end of year exam as well as in your SAC. What often stumps people is the metalinguistic terms, as they also appear in the short answer, they are 100% a must in the analytical commentary and are also necessary in the essay. Also how much you spent on Eng Lang depends on your ability and improvement - if you know you are struggling then you may need to start putting in more hours OR working smarter (maybe a study technique may not be working for you?).

So reading the Mastering Advanced EL is a good start :)

I hope this helps
Dmitri

Thanks again Dmitri! I had a look at your video package and I was wondering if I would use them to learn ahead? Or during school when the classes are taught.
So I shouldn't memorise the mastering advanced english language (mael) glossary?
Should I instead read the whole book? What about the love the lingo book?

It's up to you :) I provide quite a lot of useful content for any Year 12 student. I have tried my best to help as many people as possible.

I wouldn't memorise it, rather have a copy and go through the parts your struggling with, or for that matter interested in! As for love the lingo textbook again I would recommend you have a copy and use that as your main textbook as the study design is based off that.

Wow, okay thank you for your invaluable advice! :)
One more question- during units 1/2 I didn't have my priorities straight and did not read the love the lingo textbook at all!
During the holidays should I go back to summarise unit 1 or go and start unit 3?

Not a problem at all! In addition to going over the key metalinguistic terms, I would be more inclined to just focus on Unit 3 as that will provide you with everything you need to get started for Year 12. :)
