Hey :)

Obviously I'm no English guru, but I'll give my input since my approach helped me immensely with VCE English. Doing well in English is attainable with hard work. Redrafting work and trying to perfect it is my number one piece of advice. Also, what you need to do, is identify your weaknesses and work throughout the year at rectifying those errors. This will come with actually identifying your mistakes (e.g. do you have weak ideas, does your expression need amendment, etc). Once you've done this, you'll find your marks improving dramatically.

Hope this helped :)

For English its very very important to get feedback on your writing, even if its just from friends, but preferably teachers. During the year I was pretty slack with chasing up on feedback but nearing exams, I bugged my teachers constantly and I found that my writing improved dramatically during that time. Make sure you don't just get feedback but also work to improve on the things your teachers point out. Also, I know its difficult to have the motivation to sit down for one hour and write an essay. Instead, you can work on just writing intros or brainstorming paragraph ideas. For language analysis, I recommend trying to improve your vocabulary for describing language techniques, even if it means memorising synonyms for tones.

I know if i put my head down and actually write decent essays I will gradually improve, but kid me not every time I find the motivation in me to sit down and write an essay, I can only get through the introduction and maybe first paragraph and then it only goes downhill from there. I just cannot continue writing, I just keep telling myself that I suck at it and I end up giving up, everytime!
Also, how am i supposed to identify my weakness?
Thank you so much for the help though, really appreciate it

I was like this, trust me, I would be happily writing my essay and I'd get through the intro and 1st paragraph, read over and be super disheartened/cbs because the quality was just so bad...I'm obvs no english pro, but you gotta get over the feeling of "screw this, it sucks so much anyways" and just write (just try finish it). The first few might be crap but kind just remind yourself that everyone starts from the bottom, no one is super super duper pro without much work, remind yourself that you need to get past this by just grinding/writing! Keep working at it, I think after the first few you'll feel a bit more "free" and just write (which means you can hand these "bad"essays to a teacher/friend and get them to give you feedback. They'll reflect your current level/"at your worst"and you'll be able to see which areas are your weakness).

^not sure if that made much sense but yeah, hope it helps :) [btw Good luck!!]

Identifying your weaknesses comes with getting others to proof-read your work or you yourself reading over your pieces. It'll then be easy for you to diagnose a weakness in your work, which you can properly rectify.

Yeah it makes sense, I will certainly try it out soon. What essays can I write though? Like schools almost done, do you have any sites that there are topics or what ever to write essays on? Or should I just keep writing essays on the book we read in english this year?

Thanks for the help, means a lot to me :)

When I handwrite my essays I feel like they are terrible and sound like absolute shit. When someone reads them out loud I was like wow I am a genius. Try hearing your essays from a second party and you can identify where you went well and where you went poorly. I didn't do this throughout the year but one time my essay was read out loud to the class I was like clapping my hands over my own work.

I haven't read what others have written, so sorry if any of this is repetitive.

English is a subject where to do well you have to build up your skills, so that means working consistently throughout the year. This year I had a teacher who gave us a lot of work and some of it I didn't want to do because I didn't understand why she was setting it but now I am so grateful for her having done that because I was able to develop strong writing skills. While other classes began writing essays earlier we got their gradually and then when I started writing a lot I felt ready.

You need to know your texts back to front and feel confident about the ideas that you come up with. English isn't about having the same ideas as everyone else but being able to form your own opinions and then express them.

I like to think of year 12 as a marathon. Those that work hard all year are going to find the exam time easier. It's important to become confident with your material  and your interpretation and  to build up your language analysis skills and get your teacher to mark lots of essays. In the beginning quality is better and you can work on speed later.

If you have fun and enjoy your classes you will be more motivated to try harder

Thank you for this, I will surely take this advice and hopefully I can improve. I am willing to practice and work but how can I do so, if I write practice essays, well on what? Sometimes when I am writing on random topics to just improve my skills I sort of give up half way and think that I am wasting my time... I dont know, sometimes i just feel like giving up... :/

Hey,
I know how you feel - even if I am only at the end of year nine - but I get what you mean when you're not sure what essay topics to write about, or feel like you're wasting your time when you write to improve your skills.
What I do is that I ask my teacher for sample essay questions. Usually your teacher should have quite a few sample questions to suggest to you, all you need to do is ask. Then, pick a few quotes from your text that you think you'll need to mention in your essay. Usually good quotes can be used for a variety of topics, whether the essay question is about fate, love, death, etc (using Romeo and Juliet as an example there).
Once you've memorised these quotes, get the essay questions your teacher gave to you and write them down on little pieces of paper. Then pick one out of a hat, and make sure you're ready in exam conditions because as soon as you see that topic you should begin planning out your essay.
Write down your plan on a piece of paper and include it in your exam time. Give yourself maybe an hour to write one essay. Then, take a break, and write another. Obviously in the real English exam you won't have time to take a break, but starting easy then building it up should help you get better.
Bring your completed essays to school and ask your teacher to mark them. Also ask them for feedback to see what you can work on, and this will definitely help you heaps in the actual exam.
Obviously give yourself breathing space, and don't do an exam every night, because that'd just be waaaay too much...but try your hardest to do your best, and keep reminding yourself that you're doing this to get a good score at the end of year exam!!
I hope this helps you!!  :D
