La Trobe/Monash - worth travelling far?

So there is less than a week to change preferences and I was planning on going to Melbourne but I know that the science course is more research and theory based and I really want to work with people (speech path, nursing, occupational therapy, psych) and having to pay to spend 5 years studying might not be possible.

That's why the courses at La Trobe and Monash interest me but it would mean spending approx 4 hours a day travelling(western suburbs), and if I was to get accommodation I would need a scholarship and that isn't possible now.

ACU has courses that interest me but I don't know which one I want to do and I also don't want to pick something and not like it.
So now I have to decide whether it's worth spending so much time travelling or not.

Does anyone have experiences with these unis or have any advice??? Thanks heaps.
