Is anyone here doing Chinese next year?? This board seems super quiet :(

But yeah title says it all and I would love to meet people doing Chinese next year! Doesn't matter if you're SL or SLA to me but I'm doing SLA :) What score is everyone aiming for?

EDIT: It would also be great to see past students helping out :D Cheers!

Definitely start the General Conversation and at least pick a topic for Detailed study, as during the year you will be very busy with SAC preparation and weekly essays. By midyear, you should already have completed the Q/A for your oral and start to memorise it in preparation for the oral exam in mid October.

Just do plenty of practice exams towards the end of the year and you should be fine. The commercial exams for Chinese aren't very good so just stick to VCAA.

hey guys! :)

I did Chinese SL this year. Although I did not do too well, here is some advice I can give to you

- start your orals NOW! Aim to finish it by the holidays if possible! This will give you PLENTY of time to memorize and memorize and practise, as well as change/edit anything you may feel. Plus the later it gets, the more pressure it is and you will have other commitments too
- learn idioms if you can! as many as you can, you never know when you may need them, such as if they come up in a reading/listening text, and examiners love seeing this in the written part of the exam! Also, include them in your SACs too, as your teacher could possibly give you bonus marks, and use them in your oral too as they do make a huge impression to the examiners!
- practise a lot of essay writing! keep handing in essays to your teacher! Towards the end of the year, you should have developed a preferred format. For example, I was more of a persuasive or evaluative writer, so most of the essays I practised were in this format (keep in mind that there still is a SAC on a personal/imaginative essay though)
- most people who do Chinese, I would assume, have parents who speak Chinese/are native speakers. Use your parents as a helping hand! Practise your oral with them!

anyway, that's all

Same as you, I've started my General convo but not my detailed study! I'm kind of confused about the detailed study like how are you suppose to structure it and how do you know what information to include? And what topics can you pick for the detailed study?

Ahahah looks like we are on the same boat now! That's what I thought with the detailed study too! From what I heard of, you need a one minute introduction which introduces your 4 main topic of your research. And for the topics for detailed study, you can do anything related to the Chinese speaking community so that's pretty broad :) I've got heaps to choose from but I don't know what to choose yet haha!

I did Chinese SL this year, did very badly, so I'm redoing it next year :) Good luck to everyone else doing it next year too!
In regards to choosing a topic for detailed study, I'll chuck in my two cents. I recommend choosing a topic based on these criteria:
1. You like it
2. You have some knowledge of it
3. It is relatively "easy"/simple to understand/talk about
Or any combination of these.

It take serious dedication to redo something like Chinese. I took the cheap way, re-doing methods to settle my guilty conscience :P

Thanks buddy!
I'm thinking of doing a Diploma of Languages in Chinese at uni anyway, so continuing it throughout year 12 will make it much easier to continue :)

I'm starting units 1 2 next year and I was wondering how idioms can improve marks.

It boosts your vocabulary knowledge and sophistication in writing :) Therefore, more marks! However, you need to learn to use them wisely, and sparingly, don't go overboard or use them incorrectly.
Implementing their use in units 1/2 will be a good way to try them out and then correct your mistakes as you go (from teacher feedback and whatnot). That way, you'd have a good sense of how to use idioms and hopefully have a good stash of them handy to tackle any essay topic they might throw at you.
Also, you could probably ask your teacher for an idiom bank, that might help.

Hello fellow Chinese students. Our teacher has chosen "face' as our detailed study topic.
