Overseas during enrolment, info session and orientation?

Hi guys,
I was offered a first round place to study Arts/Law commencing this year.

I cannot attend, as I am overseas, enrolment for my Law degree on 23th January as well as my Arts information session on the 21st and my Law information session on the 28th.

I am wondering whether someone can enrol on my behalf (whether online or in person) and whether there is any way of me obtaining information that will be presented or provided in the Arts and Law information session online?

Also, what activities will I be missing out on by not attending these information sessions? Has anyone been in the same boat as me - I am missing orientation as well :( - is it hard to adapt to uni life without attending all of these sessions?

I think I was overseas for all of the above. Assuming it's the same for other faculties (which I'm pretty sure it is) you can do everything online. You'll just need to head into student services when you come back to pick up your ID card (and diary? - not sure if they still give those out).

I am wondering whether someone can enrol on my behalf (whether online or in person) and whether there is any way of me obtaining information that will be presented or provided in the Arts and Law information session online?
It's probably possible to do proxy enrollment but it'd be a ton easier just to do it online yourself. Regarding the information presented you can always contact someone from within the faculty about what will be presented and whether you can have it emailed to you or pick it up when you return but I never bothered.

Can't say I know the answer to this one but I imagine they would probably outline things like important people at uni, course structure, where you can seek help, take you on a campus tour and all that jazz. It shouldn't be too hard to adapt, I think they would probably do some of that "take to the person on your left and right, find out about them" in attempt to help people make friends but I'd bet a significant proportion of students never again (or at least rarely) talk to these people. You'll have plenty of opportunities to make friends and adapt in the first week or two of uni, don't sweat it!  ;)

I'm pretty sure that you're only supposed to go to the law one, right?

There is no longer enrolment in person, as Fyrefly said. Instead, you have a "course information session", following which you can get your ID card.

The former is actually somewhat useful for law. What used to happen (keeping in mind that the introductory unit has changed) was that you'd get course material for it (a whole booklet full of it), as well as a lot of information about the first assessment (worth 30%) from the lovely chief examiner. I'm not sure if something similar will occur this year, but there's a good possibility that it might.

The law faculty takes this session quite seriously, and says that if you can't attend one of the dates listed here for undergraduate students, you must call 1800 MONASH. Considering that I'm quite sure they don't take attendance, you aren't really obliged to do this, but they do consider it a 'step' in getting into your course.

Your biggest loss out of not attending the first information session (on Friday) is that tickets will be sold for the LSS Camp. If you planned to go to it, depending on how jaffy your cohort is, there is a chance that you'll miss out completely.

The other thing that happens on the day is that you can collect your ID card, after having enrolled online and got all those fancy transaction numbers. See here under the heading "Collect your ID card". You must do this in person -- and obviously since your photo is being taken, you must go yourself -- but it really can be done at any time before the semester starts afaik.

Really? if that is so, it would be awesome cuz atm I have to get my sister to go to Clayton for me and that's a hassle.

I was given this link: http://www.law.monash.edu.au/current-students/enrolments/enrolment-day.html which says I have to attend enrolment on 23th Jan? Is this the one where they take a photo - and therefore my sister shouldn't bother going since she's not (obviously) in the ID photo?

Did you go to the LSS camp? I am really keen but I will arrive back in Melbourne the day before the camp, haha. Is this camp really beneficial in terms of meeting new people and adapting to the course? I heard from a friend that friendship groups are formed in this camp, lol, and people tend to stick with their friends from Law Camp.

Firstly, you're not a transfer student, right? Your date would be January 28 then, according to the list of dates here.

If you go to enrolment stage 4, click can't attend for law, it'll tell you that if you can't attend at least one of those, you should contact the faculty. I'm not 100% sure that they don't take attendance, but I do think they don't. In any case, it'd be a good idea to try to make it to one of those; and if you can't, contact the faculty.

Your sister definitely shouldn't go. There'll be no point in her sitting through a one-hour lecture on the introductory law unit, then not being able to get your ID card (for obvious reasons). There's no 'enrolment' going on on the day. That's all online.

As for LSS camp, it has absolutely no relevance to adapting to the course :P It's basically a drinkfest (well, not exclusively, but yeah). Some people form solid friendship groups, others might meet a person or two they'll keep in touch with. It's not critical -- there'll be plenty of other opportunities. Only about a third of the cohort goes, in any case.

Same situation as you zezima.

I messaged monash via ask.monash, advised I couldn't attend, they said no problem, when you're back in Melbourne go to the law undergrad services desk to get the info and ID.

Call them if you want, but the emailing system does the same thing and saves a phone call. It's not a big deal, like I'm sure some intl students may not arrive in Melbourne until like a day before classes.

P.s. I'm pretty sure you're counted as a local Vtac first round offers student for enrollment, as international students are those paying full fees in cash and coming in on a specific student visa for the course. Like if you are getting HECS you aren't an international student.
