Memorising Vocab

Hi, everyone

I am trying to memorise Japanese vocab from my Wakatta textbook, however I feel that by the time I've memorised one unit, I've forgotten some of the words in the previous units.

How did/do you guys plan to tackle the various vocab and commit them to memory? :)

Thanks!

Hey,

I'm not learning Jap nor have I learned it. However I am learning Indo, and I will share some tips when learning vocab :)

[It's probs harder memorising Jap words tho :P]

- I complete vocab games - such as fill in the gap, cross words etc < I found this really useful (there should be books like this!)
- I put vocab in sentences , sentences that are relatable
- I try to use vocab everyday - make random sentences or even think of vocab while replying to people in English < haha a bit weird I know ...but constant retrieval is the key!
- In fact you should try and speak in Jap constantly with new vocab. - Even if it's talking to yourself!
- Cue cards , ask others to test you
- Watch dramas in Jap or with Jap subs
- READ... I cannot stress this enough... vocab will really start to sink in when you come across it multiple times! Especially the common and essential vocab ... read newspaper articles in Jap . If that's not your thing, read cartoon, dialogue, interviews, stories
- ^ the aforementioned dot point...is what I truly believe will help you. Constant exposure will plant vocab in your brain
- Probably look for material e.g reading material, listening material that's organised by themes. E.g I read articles or excerpts of info related to a topic such as Environment or Indonesian Lifestyel or Indonesian Food etc... and in a sense, vocab should be 'grouped' ...and once again , specific vocabwill reappear in similiar texts < so constant exposure and retrieval

That's all :) Good luck, hopefully this helped to an extent :D

Hi,

I would agree with what kawfee said; I think they're all good tips. :)

When I was doing Japanese, I used memrise.com, which is a website.. well, a website for memorising things using flashcards, and I find it particularly useful for things like learning vocabulary. What they do is increase the time between each revision of a particular flash card, so as you get a card correct, you'll see it less and less often, until it's been 'ingrained into your memory'.
If you feel like using it, I've made a course/deck with the vocabulary from Wakatta: http://www.memrise.com/course/251860/wakatta-japanese-course-book-vocabulary/
