Studying during my gap year

Hi guys,
This year I'm doing a gap year to work and earn some money, but I get easily bored when I'm not doing something productive. So I really want to start studying a bit of maths and Chem at university level, but as I'm not enrolled (differed) I have no access to anything. Does anyone know of anyway that I can study these subjects?

Impossible if you want to do assignments and all that.

If you just want the lecturers you can probably find someone to give them to you (?). All monash recordings are available to all students. I believe at UoM you are only restricted to the ones you are enrolled in but there used to be a trick to get them still (i dont know if its still available). I'd be careful to not get too burnt out before you even start though. Studying isn't as fun as it sounds once the first year zeal wears off.

Alternatively, try things like MIT OpenCourseware, Coursera, etc which all offer university courses from places like Stanford, Yale, etc.

Well I have to play a bit of catchup at uni anyway (didn't do pre req) so I'd like to have an idea about the subject before hand, not burn myself out though. Other than getting someone to give you the lectures, no way?

Khan Academy for maths. Sal basically teaches the entire content of Calc 1, Calc 2 and Eng Maths and more. Also, the quality of teaching is better than the average lecturer at UoM in my experience. But you'd have to make sure that you do some exercises/problems too, not just watch the videos.

Could you possibly link me? I'm having trouble finding it.

At the top you'll see "subjects", click it and then you'll see everything there. You can also visit their YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/khanacademy/videos

Thanks for that. I was able to find Linear Algebra, but didn't know which category Calculus 1 and 2 fell under. Can you tell me?

Although this would mean cutting your gap year short, I don't think there's anything stopping you from starting mid-year and doing a part-time course load (one or two subjects.) Could also do a summer subject this way.

It just happens that the lecturer Alex Ghitza posts resources for the subjects he is teaching on his site...not many lecturers do this.

I have to earn a certain threshold to qualify for independent youth allowance. So I can't.

Nothing wrong with being a bit keen :P
I'd recommend picking up James Stewart's Calculus: Early transcendentals and working your way through the basics to get a firm grasp of calculus, definitely devote a lot of time to sequences and series and understanding the principles underpinning basic calculus. That is, if you're keen on Maths.

As for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, working your way through Khan Academy videos is a good place to start. The courses are mainly geared to AP students but most of the content is relevant to a first year uni course. I am a big fan of Patrick JMT, but as for Maths and the fundamentals, I don't think you can go wrong with Stewart.

And if you're super, super keen, pick up Spivak's Calculus texts, those things are amazing.

That same website has a few more, but yeah, as already started it's just that Alex Ghitza shares all of his stuff

When I clicked the link the other day, it came up with videos of his lectures, but now when I click it, I have to log into EchoSystem or something... Anyone know why?
