Good quality, light laptops? (not too expensive)

What kind of laptop do you take to uni?

I've been considering a macbook air (through the apple education website which is slightly cheaper), but I also like the new hp spectre. Only thing is, they are still quite pricey. Are there any that anyone knows about which are a bit cheaper around 13' but also really light? I've found that most of the ones under $1,000 are actually really heavy.

I don't want a tablet, and top specs aren't a requirement(though would be nice) because I have another laptop at home (which is 17' so no way am I bringing it)

Thanks (:

If you're just looking for something to take notes on/watch lectures/view slides on I'd probably recommend a Chromebook. I find that they're lightweight and have a large battery life too.

DO NOT buy a chromebook unless you can get a Toshiba Chromebook 2,  which is probably the best Chromebook on the market at the moment.  It's relatively cheap (300-350), the display is beautiful,  the battery life is amazing,  the model itself is light and stylish and it has good specs overall.  Other Chromebooks are usually lacking in one department, whether it is the display, battery life, design or overall performance.
However if you are looking for good compatibility with most programs, a good OS and a lightweight good performing laptop you really can't go wrong with a Macbook air. Personally I bought one, and you can get a good discount on it with the education discount. Also you can dual boot windows if you don't like mac but that's your choice.

Macbook air is the right way to go. They're fantastic and don't constantly bugger up like other computers. Couldn't recommend them anymore highly for Uni

I've had absolutely no issues with my HP chromebook, and I reckon it's the best purchase I've ever made (particularly for ~$300, as opposed to those thousand dollar macbooks everyone seems to get)

I know you don't like tablets but what about an all-in-one (such as a Microsoft Surface?). I've got one and it works wonders.

They're too expensive, and I'd be better off getting a mac.

Some of the lower end models are available for under $1000. I've seen people write on them and it is quite clear, makes annotating lecture notes easy. When I upgrade my current laptop I'm thinking of going to a Surface.
