How do subject exams work?

Hey guys,

Just wondering in terms of subjects in general, do most subjects tend to test the years' worth of knowledge in the end of year exams or just the knowledge learned in the semester?

Also, i'm currently undertaking MTH1040 if anyone knows the process how they divide the exam for that subject.

Much appreciated and thanks in advance :)

They test whatever the lecturer feels like testing - there are some units where they have a mid-sem test on the content from weeks 1-4, and then exam on the rest of the content. There are some units where they have a mid-sem on the content from weeks 1-4, and then exam everything still. There are also some units with a mid-sem on everything and no exam, or no mid-sem and an exam, or none for either.

In general, you'll only be tested on stuff from that unit, though. Look to your unit guide/unit coordinator for more information.

There is very little standardisation like in VCE. Especially across the entire university, at least regarding exams (besides basic rules about fairness, etc). There is somewhat some similarity in the same area/faculty.

That said, by in large, every subject is a totally self contained unit and its run however the co-ordinator wants to run it. This is of course very unlike VCE but that's how it goes. A unit can only examine you on the content learned in that unit. If they require have prerequisite knowledge, its useful to know that in order to succeed. So, its almost always stuff you learned in that unit, in that semester.
