What can I do?

I was just wondering what I can be doing each night for English to help myself improve? In other subjects you can do practice questions, but English isn't like that.
I already am summarising notes, writing practice essays and reading my texts. But I was wondering if there is anything else you can do.

Thanks :D

Other than the ones you've already mentioned:

You could perhaps read the paper (recommend 'The Age') and try to take note of the words and structure used in articles, editorials etc.

You could also try to read books in your leisure time. Note: This would probably be a waste if you don't find the book you're reading interesting or captivating. Try to find books that are aligned with your interests.

English is quite a tricky subject in the sense that it's quite difficult to study for as you mentioned in your original post. I guess doing what I mentioned above will help increase not only your vocabulary but also allow you to be exposed to different ways/forms of writing.

For language analysis, I like to analyse language for fun. For example, your mum might be speaking to you. You can analyse her words by asking yourself: "What is her contention?", "what is her tone of voice?", things like that. Form quick statements of analysis then colour it with good vocabulary and concise and coherent sentences.

For context, ponder over things. E.g. "Conflict is never fair". Keep this topic in your mind, be aware of how conflict arises within your everyday life and how the people involved are consequently affected. (Just an example, tailor it to the context you're doing). Also read and annotate the texts for it.

For text response, read the text (as you've done), and annotate. Then, explore. I'd suggest putting yourself into the eyes of the characters in the book/play/movie. If it's a movie, explore the film techniques: mis-en-scene, lighting, contrast, sounds, camera angles, size, etc.

For each, look at the sample prompts and articles from past examples then meditate over them. Perhaps even have a go at them when you feel like it. These should point you in the direction of how you should be thinking about each area in English.
