How hard is it to get ~40s?

It's a pretty broad question, but I'm wondering how hard is it? I've heard that you have to be in the ~7% of the stage to break 40, but I may be wrong.

For further information, I go to a decent public school ranked in the high 60s. Rather weak in English, so that's a bummer..

40s are tough but achievable. That goes without saying for just about every subject that most students do. For some subjects however, such as some languages, it is extremely difficult.

Basically, it all depends on the subject.

Your school is ranked quite well, I don't think you'll have too many problems with your cohort.

Depends on far too many variables.

Focus on a good sac ranking and doing well on the exam, and the score will come with the effort. :)

Mixed bag really.

Last year, I managed to pull 40+. I barely did any work in unit 3 and only got a B+, but I pulled my head in at unit 4 and got a scaled 100 for Unit 4 SACs and a mid A+ for my exam.

Moral of the story: consistent work throughout the year will get you the mark you want. If you work hard 40 will be a breeze.

1/10 people who do a 3/4 subject get 40+.  Hence, 9/10 of people find it too hard; hence, for the 'average' person (whatever that means :P) it is very difficult.  It's such a subjective question, as it varies so much from person to person.  It depends on a few things, some of which you can change and some of which you can't:

a. Your intelligence/abilities (or whatever you want to call it).
b. How hard you're willing to work.
c. Your life circumstances at the time.
d. Your overall mindset (how high you aim, whether you believe in yourself, ability to cope with stress etc.)
e. Your school, cohort, teacher etc.  Though I like to believe that no matter what school you're at you can achieve if you rely on yourself rather than others to achieve for you.

If you work hard but don't have a. and c. in your favour, then you have very little hope of a 40+.  Sorry, harsh but the fact is that only 1/10 of people do achieve it!  If everyone state-wide started working three times as hard, still only 1/10 would achieve it.

However, the very fact that you're part of the AN community and are clearly working hard and aiming high in year 10 suggests that a., b. and d. are likely to be in your favour.  If that's the case, then I agree, with consistent hard work, you should be fine with achieving it.

(P.S. Hope nothing in this sounds arrogant - unintentional if so ::)).

i went to a school ranked in the mid low 60s so i might be able to relate on cohort strength. at schools in this echelon (from what friends at competing schools in rankings have said) and based on my experience, in a regular subject, i would say maybe the top 10% -25% of a subjects cohort will get 40 or higher depending on the subject. aim to be in the top couple of kids in rankings in your classes, you probably dont NEED to be first unless it is a subject your school is horrendous at (like history at my school), and aim to break the A+ barrier on the exam, and you should be looking at the 40s. this is just anecdotal from a small yet probably pretty representative sample space. some kids do end up with A+ A+ A+ and 39 which is super bad luck LOL but in general if you can get a couple marks over A+ on the exam and maintain a high ranking at your school you should be sweet.
i got low 40s in a few subjects and i pretty much just took this approach in them. i got either ON or 1-2 marks over the A+ cut off on the exam but was ranked in the top 6 or so in all of them and got low 40s

good luck
