Yeah, I completely agree with you there - have to be Kelly given he's so young. What about if it was only for one year - would your answer change?

Still go with Kelly. Fyfe not worth $1.5m asking price (nor is he even worth $1m). I don't think any player is worth $1m a season, regardless of how good they are.

I mean.. I heard in the media Essendon were floating around $1.6 for Dusty. That is absolutely insane if it's true.

Like,

Martin is probably a good age profile for us. 25, pretty experienced, explosive player. Would be amazing for memberships. I could definitely get around a Martin/Petracca combination, switching between the centre square and full forward.

Kelly is clearly the best option long(er) term IMO. Huge potential, already playing at a stupidly high level. Brownlow material - also would bring the class that Melbourne lacks at the moment IMO.

Fyfe. Obviously an uninformed opinion but I'm not convinced he's over his injury concerns. It's funny how time works - Fyfe would clearly have been the #1 player picked in the competition not too long ago.

In true Melbourne fashion, we (effectively) passed on all three lol. I can't split Martin and Kelly for the Dees specifically. Maybe Martin.

B || Neville Jetta - Sam Frost - Joel Smith
HB || Jayden Hunt - Tom McDonald - Michael Hibberd
C || Christian Salem - Clayton Oliver - Jordan Lewis
HF || Christian Petracca - Jesse Hogan - Jack Watts
F || Jeff Garlett - Cam Pedersen - Mitch Hannan
R || Max Gawn - Jack Viney - Nathan Jones
I/C || Dom Tyson - Bernie Vince - Billy Stretch - Aaron vandenBerg

Close: Jack Trengove, Angus Brayshaw, Dean Kent, Jake Melksham, Colin Garland, Aaron vandenBerg, Sam Weideman, Oscar McDonald, Alex Neal-Bullen, Tomas Bugg, Jake Spencer, Ben Kennedy, Josh Wagner, James Harmes.

Off the top of my head (so probably missed a few), I reckon that's close to our best 22. Looking at that, I've firmed on Dustin Martin. Would seriously make it an amazing and dynamic midfield.

I think I'd take Stephen May over all three, though.

See, I reckon I'd go with Martin if you had the choice for only one season. He's exactly what the Dogs need right now - a gun half-forward/mid, can play at full-forward... would be perfect for us. Kelly, on the other hand, is probably another player similar to what we already have. Don't get me wrong, he's an absolute gun, but our midfield is already pretty deep, and he's more of a pure midfielder.

Fyfe's an interesting one. If you told me that all three were going to play at their best all year, I'd probably take him out of all of then - that is to say, I think Fyfe's best is probably better than Martin and Kelly's best (at this stage).

Hmm, that's a whole different question haha.

What does Melbourne need most? IMO:

- Gun full back
- Outside run
- Key forward who can ruck

Outside run can be covered to a degree with quick ball movement, and I'm pretty happy with our midfield as a collective at the moment. Pedersen isn't a world-beater, but I like him - and he provides a good contest both in ruck and forward. So I'd be extremely tempted by Rance/May/Talia/Tarrant, yeah. Probably Rance.

As a Dogs fan, I reckon I'd take Josh Kennedy (West Coast). He's a gun at the Eagles and we've got an ever better mid, so he could be unstoppable.

You'd take Kennedy over Franklin?

Yeah, I would. More goals in the last three seasons, comfortably. Dogs have the midfield to hit him up consistently.

Probably fair enough for the Dogs due to the dominance of your midfield. I feel Kennedy relies on it a bit more than Franklin does.

Your own team aside, who would you prefer?

A tough one. Despite both being key forwards, they're quite different players. Are we saying for one year or the rest of their careers?

For one year.

Next year. Assume both are injury-free, and play all games.

Probably Franklin. I feel like he would be better in a weaker team than Kennedy.
