How does 1/2 affect your 3/4?
« on: April 10, 2015, 09:19:52 pm »

Hi, I'm in year 10 this year and still oblivious to some of the basics of the VCE system, yey. Some of the people in my class stress pretty hard every time an exam comes around but we're only doing 1/2, which confused me a little. :-\ This might seem like a weird ask, but I was wondering if your performance in Unit 1/2 affects your 3/4 in any way at all, besides laying down a good foundation?

Say, for example, I do badly in all my exams for 1/2 in Methods, does that mean my 3/4 is endangered somehow? If so, in what ways?

Thank you!

Long story short - no impact.
All you get in the end is a S or N, so I suppose if you score an N, your school might not let you continue that subject. But as far as things go, you can fail a 1/2 and still do really well in 3/4. Only the SACs and exam you do in 3/4 count.

Having said all that, of course, If you are struggling and failing to cope with a 1/2 subject, then you can't really expect miracles to happen and ace the 3/4.

In order to obtain your VCE, you need to complete 16 units at the minimum:

Directly from VCAA's Frequently Asked Questions page:

To earn your VCE, you must satisfactorily complete at least 16 units.

Regardless of how many units you do altogether, you must satisfactorily complete:

At least three units from the English group listed below:
Foundation English Units 1 and 2
        English Units 1 to 4
English as an Additional Language (EAL) Units 3 and 4
English Language Units 1 to 4
        Literature Units 1 to 4
At least one of these units must be at Unit 3 or 4 level. However, VTAC advises that for the calculation of the ATAR, students must satisfactorily complete both Unit 3 and Unit 4 of an English sequence.
Three sequences of Unit 3 and 4 studies in addition to the sequence chosen from the English group. These sequences can be from VCE studies and/or VCE VET programs.

As mentioned above, 1/2 units do not directly impact your actual ATAR. You only obtain an S or N (obviously you want all of them to be S!). Use these subjects as an opportunity to refine and update your knowledge for the 3/4's.

Some subjects, like maths subjects and chem and even English subjects afaik where 1/2 is a foundation for 3/4 so it's kinda important to focus on them. some other subjects though, you can get away with not even doing the 1/2 and still do well on the 3/4 because the 1/2 is irrelevant, and for some subjects the 1/2 only equates to like 10% of the 3/4 content.
even, say, if you 'failed' 1/2 methods or something and if you work hard a good score is still achievable :) (I did really shit in 1/2 - almost got an N but got a 30+ SS) ~ however, I do strongly recommend you do try hard in 1/2 cos a lot of the content is expanded on in 3/4 and I really wish I worked hard in 1/2 cos I had to play catch-up which sucked
but yeah, I do agree that you should try in your 1/2s anyway so you can 'get used to' how to cope with VCE content. I personally do wish I stressed harder in my 1/2s in year 10!

good luck :)
