Tutoring services in BOX HILL

Hey!

I know that there are many tutoring services available in the Box Hill region, but what tutors would you guys personally recommend? What tutors are really outstanding? Specifically, I'm looking at VCE Maths Methods, doesn't matter if private or group. Anywhere in Box Hill or around that area is fine.

Since you're only in Year 10, it's a perfect time to try a few out. Your results won't impact significantly on your 3/4s this year and you're in a good position to do so. Kudos to you for taking action early!

What's considered a recommendable tutoring service for others is different to what might be suitable for you, because everyone has different learning styles, capabilities, etc.

Personally, I tried out multiple tutoring services and figured that the only subject where I needed tutoring was English because that was my primary weakness. I found that class settings for subjects like Maths weren't as great because the teacher aren't able to spend as much time as required on addressing difficult curveball questions which are the questions that separate the good students from the top students.

If you're searching for individual tutors it's best to book someone for next year as most good tutors are full at this time of year.

If you're searching for classes, Dr He and Breakthrough are the main ones in BH.

This may not be relevant but in case you were interested in TSFX as well, just think twice before signing up for any of their programs. I didn't believe anyone until I tried it out myself for all of my subjects and I can assure you, it's a waste of money and I doubt you'll even need/use their notes or retain anything covered in the ridiculously long lectures held in the city.

Wow, thanks for all the advice! English is also my primary weakness, I'll definitely need a private tutor I would think. If you don't mind me asking, what English are you doing?  And as far as English tutors go, who would you recommend?

Yeah, me neither til I started this year.
I got a 1on1 tutor for Methods and Chinese and attend weekend Chinese schools and Dr He (Level 4).

From my perspective,

For Methods: Uni Students are better, mine is great because he's very enthusiastic and plans out my plan of attack for methods REALLY well. I went from a ~40 S.S student to a 45+ this year because of how he structures the way I approach VCE maths, and he's quite a bit cheaper, only around $50 per session. Dr He falls in that regard, but I quite like him anyway (his questions are more difficult than VCE, but i'll be very grateful to him if he ever manages to predict some of the final end of year curveball questions). So if I had to pick from the two, i'd get a tutor, but go to both if you can!

Chinese: Don't get a uni student. I got a teacher who taught at XJS and they're just so much more experienced and know the VCE curriculum inside out. They're really expensive, upwards of $70/ph but I suppose it'll be worth it in the end if I get a 40+. Still go to Chinese School because everyone else is practically doing it and you'll fall behind if you don't

I'd definitely recommend experienced tutors provided that their fees are affordable to you otherwise, you could try recent VCE graduates who did well. It's never too late to experiment and don't be shy to tell them you just want to see how you go with their first class and whether or not their teaching method/s suits your learning.

Mc raises a good point! For myself, my tutor offered the first two sessions free and he was very easygoing with the entire process and never pressured me to make a decision.
