Hi i am currently in year 11 and was wondering if it would be possible to do English language 3/4 without 1/2. I want to change because looking at the study design it looks a lot more fun and interestic than normal english.

Yeah it's possible. Just ensure that you go through the metalanguage and learn it all before next year.

Yep, metalanguage is really the only thing, from memory, that applies to both 1/2 and 3/4. Whilst 1/2 is interesting, it's not necessary to do well in 3/4.

In particular, I would focus on being familiar with the five sub-systems of language. From VCAA:

  • Phonetics and phonology (the study of the sounds of language);
  • Morphology and lexicology (the study of the structure or forms of words);
  • Syntax (the study of how words are combined into sentences);
  • Semantics (the study of meaning in language); and
  • Discourse (the study of how written and spoken texts of two or more sentences are organised).

Best wishes. :)

I'm doing it right now, and I've managed to do pretty well so far
All I did was:
Had 1 session with a tutor- showed me the study design, gave me some notes on the subsystems (you need to know these pretty well, although our teacher quickly went over them again in the first few weeks anyway)
Did the holiday homework that the class had been assigned
Read through some exams to get a feel of what I was actually learning the stuff for (like how it applies)
Sat down with the teacher and just skimmed over everything to make sure I had covered most of the stuff that was assumed knowledge

It wasn't as hard as i thought in the end looking back, and I am eternally thankful I left mainstream english
While I'm occasionally a bit sloppy on metalangauge, after a term I pretty much had all the terms and definitions etc. down pat

feel free to pm me if you want more in depth info
