strawberries' 3/4 englang questions thread!

hi guys :)

sorry I just have a really stupid question atm:

When ethnolect AusEng speakers use the wrong tense markers, e.g. 'I have done this' instead of 'I had done this', would this be described as a morphological or syntactic feature?

sorry
thanks :)

I believe is more syntactical as it is about the tense, and effects the structure of the sentence.

In another essence, I would personally prefer it to be under lexical features.

hey guys, this is a stupid question but can someone explain overt and covert prestige to me?

Is overt prestige basically the standard 'norm' - so in the case of Australian English, the general Australian accent or something?
and covert is something else?

Overt prestige is what you would expect from governments, maybe your principal, legal documents etc and is achieved by using standard Australian English. Maintain social distance and creates a professional, credible identity

Covert prestige is more in group, so by using slang you create covert prestige and foster in group solidarity

That's a very basic overview, does that help at all?

yeah theres definately been plenty of those over the years, although i'd quickly learn one other topic just in case. maybe formal language (e.g. euphemism, pc, doublespeak, politeness) so you have one informal and one formal topic (language and identity is usually informal from slang etc) and you should be pretty safe with one of those being on the exam. not ideal, but since you have limited time i'd quickly just try to commit some basic paragraphs to memory just to cover as many topics as you can

There is a good chance of there being one :P There usually is from what I've seen of VCAA's topics.
however, it also happens to be the most popular (probably because it's fresh in the minds of students).
