Expectations too high?
« on: July 22, 2015, 08:04:15 pm »

Recently I've been feeling that the expectations I have set for myself are way too high.

I'm scared that if my expectations are too high, I'll be disappointed with my study score - regardless of how good it is.

Currently, I really want a 50 in further at the end of the year. Although I'm travelling fairly well, I'm not sure if this is achievable - further is extremely competitive!!

Does anyone have any advice on how to set expectations/goals of yourself? Is anything really achievable with hard work... or do you have be realistic to some extent?

Any input would be fabulous :)

The way I see it, it's better to aim high, get a 45 and be disappointed than it is to aim lower, get a 40, and be stoked.

Seriously though, aim high as Ned Nerb said, aiming for a 50 and getting 45 is actually better than aiming lower and getting a 40.

"Reach for the moon, because even if you fail you'll land among the stars"

It's good to have high goals!! Just as long as you don't put too much pressure on yourself. What I mean by that is you should still have that goal of 'I'm going to try and get a 50' but also consider what it would mean if you did get slightly lower. So, have those scores that you reeeally want and also scores that you can't get below. Eg. You reeeally want a 50 but you would be okay with a 47+ too.

And from there- it's just effort.

I think it's good to have high goals but they should be achievable. I think it's better to set up smaller goals in between now and getting 50, instead of just having "getting a 50" as your one goal.

Great point! I tend to set small goals and reward myself after each one
My end goal is a 50 in methods and a 40+ in chinese. Reason why I'm not aiming for a 50 is because it's pretty unrealistic even if I put in a load of work. The competition is just too strong

Can confirm that this is not true.

Can confirm that this is not true.

Of course there are things like how well you do on the day of exams and scaling, but no one can control these variables. Doing well in VCE has more to do with effort than natural ability. You can be smart and get crap scores or the other way around.  Yeah, a lot of it is luck and some people end up unlucky but for those completing it now all you can do is your best. I had some bad scores amongst mine and I'm not going to blame them on the school I went to or say that they're a result of what I'm capable of because they're not- but sometimes things happen.

There's a difference between being cocky and thinking that you're definitely going to do well, and doing everything you can to get where you want to be. Not everyone gets what they want but you have to try.

Can confirm - natural ability made me the top of the class in year 11 Japanese. Lack of effort meant I got one of the worst study scores in the class the year afterwards (and a score so bad that even scaling didn't put it in my primary 4).

I set pretty ridiculous standards for myself (eg. <85% is a fail).

It's better to set the bar high though, I could 'fail' every subject and still do reasonably. However, if I set my standards at 50% pass, then I will actually fail.
