Wanting to become a Paediatrician

Hey guys!

So i'm currently in year 12, i am looking into becoming a nurse but wanting to focus more on helping children out hence me wanting to become a paediatric nurse. So my question is how would i actually come about into becoming a paediatric nurse, any suggestions in which university would help me get into this field? Another question would be if i wanted to become a Paediatric doctor what courses would i be wanting to take up?
Thanks in advance :D

I have no idea about paediatric nurses but I do know about paediatrician courses. I'll split this up into unis.

Monash: Monash offers an undergraduate medicine course that you will need to get into to become a paediatrician. You will need to sit the UMAT (this years has already passed IIRC) then go through an interview process as well as meet the ATAR requirement. They do offer a post-grad medicine course but you will need to be a student at Monash to get in. They offer 50 places for their Biomed students and 25 for other degrees at Monash.

Melbourne: The only medicine course offered is their post-grad med course. The pre-requisites for the course is to do the 3 pre-requisite subjects in second year, meet the GAMSAT requirement and to meet their GPA requirement. The only way to get a guaranteed entry is to get 99.90+ ATAR.

I'm not too sure on the details but I know Queensland university and University of Newcastle both offer an undergrad paediatrician course. I know they have an interview process because my cousin had multiple interviews. Just beware that there is a different process to applying to interstate unis. Good luck!

Re: paediatrician pathway
1. Any medical course (as outlined above), could be 5-7+ years depending on the pathway you choose
2. Intern year, 1 year
3. Residency as either a general resident or as an official trainee in the RACP Paediatrics pathway, 2+ years
4. General paediatrics Registrar who has to pass a written and clinical exam, 1+ year
5. Become an advanced trainee in General Paediatrics or another specialty (many people don't become one on their first go), 3+ years
6. You're now a Fellow waiting for a Consultant position, you may want to do a PhD to make yourself more employable, 3+ years
7. Finally, a minimum of 15 years later after VCE, you are a Paediatrician, congrats! :D

(replace paediatrician with any physician specialty and this rings about true as a minimum for this day and age)
