If you have 'forgotten' the more interesting bits, then they probably weren't interesting enough :P

All the smartest people are off at the olympiads and probably don't have a care for VCE. After all, if you've done well in an olympiad a university would be crazy to refuse you.

Not if you want to do med, and considering some olympiads required missing the UMAT this year...I actually know some people who decided to not study/not attempt olympiad study for this reason...

My point:
All the people at the olympiads are smart, all the smart people are not off at the olympiads

The probably is, but a lot of the most intelligent people are the people who bomb out.

How do you know that?

only anecdotal evidence, I have not done a study on people with high IQs and their liklihood to bomb out relative to people with average IQs. However, it is a widely acknowledged fact that intelligent people are often the most messed up. And also I just find that a lot of them don't really apply themselves in school. If you were to go through my highly intelligent friends, most of them aren't performing that well in school, or didn't perform that when they went to school. However, that's to do with the people I know, and the people I find interesting to talk to.

Maybe those people aren't* as intelligent as you thought?
It's just your choice of words that makes your anecdotal evidence seem lame. I'll bolden the bits for you.

There isnt an absolute correlation between the two, but the general picture is that there is a noticeable degree of correlation between the two.

Somewhat related: I find it really annoying when people say 'I could have done really well if I had tried'.

Is this because they are actually stupid or are they just lazy?
