Hello,
My name is Jai Carmichael and I'm offering tuition in Units 3/4, NOT 1/2, Chemistry next year.
Why choose me as your tutor? For what it's worth, I graduated the VCE in 2014 with an ATAR of 98.25, and a (raw) study score in Chemistry of 46. However, I don't believe such scores in any way are what make me a good tutor; rather, the following are things that make me a good tutor.
- I have a year's worth of experience in tutoring: in 2015, I taught 10 students on a weekly basis.
- I am receptive to the fact that different students have preferences for different learning styles, and am able to adjust my teaching accordingly.
- I actually *know* the VCE Chemistry course: in my opinion, what makes me a better tutor than some other tutors with more experience is that some of these other tutors have become 'out-of-touch' with the course; having completed VCE Chemistry only a year ago and having taught the subject for the past year, I know exactly what VCAA expects of you.
- I actually have a passion for teaching; in fact, I am currently in the process of changing my degree to a Bachelor of Education + Bachelor of Science. I don't simply tutor for money; I tutor because I enjoy doing so and for the experience.
- I have a wide range of resources, including practice exams and my own personal notes, which 'get straight to the point' in terms of covering what VCAA expects you to know.
What is my teaching philosophy? As I said above, I am receptive to different learning styles and am able to tailor my tutoring to individual's unique needs and circumstances. Furthermore, I am a massive advocate of orderliness: my pet peeve as a student is teachers who don't approach content in an orderly fashion, but rather 'jump all over the place'. Lastly, and most importantly, my preferred teaching style is practice- and visual-based. I tend to 'draw' as I explain concepts (e.g. diagrams, molecules, etc.) and the way in which I try to consolidate student's knowledge is through sets of questions that cover a spectrum of difficulties.
Where do I offer tuition?I only tutor at people's homes within the South-East suburbs. These suburbs include, but are not limited to: Clyde, Berwick, Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Pakenham and Keysborough. I understand this is an unpopular approach, with many tutors instead doing their work at public libraries. However, this is simply my personal preference, and none of my students last year had any problems regarding this.
When am I available? As all of my Year 12 students recently finished up, I have plenty of availabilities. I only tutor Mondays-Thursdays. I am happy to begin tuition starting now!
What is my cost?I charge $40 for an hour, and $70 for two hours. I do NOT offer group sessions. Again, this is a personal preference of mine, as I don't consider group sessions to be conducive to maximising learning.
How do you inquire? You can PM me here on ATAR Notes, but I'd rather you email me at
