Thanks for the comments on my lecture guys!

I have had a lot of people telling me they got a lot out of it and every comment/message like that makes me feel like it's all worth it

It's always an awkward lecture to put together, with ~85% of kids having done GMA and ~50% of kids having done Methods there are a lot of topics that are dangerous because they will bore some people or lose other people

in fact there are a grand total of two 'safe' topics in the entire course: reciprocal graphs and concavity. That isn't really enough to fill a whole lecture so that's why a little revision of partial fractions and complex numbers was necessary. I know non-gma kids even got a little lost in the short complex numbers revision section because it's a very nuanced topic and requires a careful introduction.

Maybe this overlap was part of the reason for the rowdy-ness --- nobody was chatting during concavity!
but I could tell it was a lot worse at the second lecture too, so probably a mix between disengagement with the content and just tiredness from already sitting through a full lecture --- a long day for everyone!

I know I need to spell check, I am sincerely sorry for the awfulness in the slides, I will try to touch them up today before they are sent out

If anyone was at the second lecture, when I was typing 'scary... right up until you actually do it' and it came up as 'scary... rihup ul youacully d i' or something I was SO EMBARRASSED the keyboard was just not as sensitive as I am used to

Thanks to your lectures, I can finally do some graphing! Without any knowledge of specialist 1/2, you made it possible!

Thanks!  ;D

Btw by any knowledge of specialist 1/2, I was talking about myself

Suggestion for future AN lectures

Firstly thanks to Matt and Sammy who presented the Spesh and Meth lectures yesterday.

Yesterday, at both Spesh (less of spesh than methods) and Methods lectures, numerous individuals in the crowd were disrespectful. AN is a hardworking community, a dedicated one for those that want to pursue higher academic grades. Think about it, why should AN organise lectures open to everyone in the community for free, for those who aren't active or even members on AN? For example, yesterday, at the start of the methods lecture, people were saying, "oh Sammy only got 47 raw, why the f*** is he lecturing us?"  In the middle of the lecture, someone disrespectfully shouted out "pi/11" to an answer which was wrong and when sammy corrected him, he said "just joking" before starting to laugh again. The member of the crowd again shouted out another wrong answer 2 minutes later. As Bangali mentioned earlier, the small minority that were disrespectful regarded AN lectures as:

-Its free (less concentration)
-An excuse to go out with your mates whilst "pretending" to do something educational

AN shouldn't care how many we can fit in the lecture. If i were AN, i would rather take a lecture full of dedicated students who actually want to learn than 3 lectures but of which half the students aren't as dedicated.

Solution
-Make the headstart lectures $20 but include the notes for "free"
-Mid Year Lecture
$10 for newcomers(didn't come during lecture 1), $5 who came to lecture 1. Money goes to AN meets, development of AN, charity?
Revision lecture $10, provide additional revision lecture notes+key tips

TL;DR Charge everyone for the lectures, but provide the notes for free. Win win for all except the disrespectful guys.

Qazser

Some great points made qazser! Can't we have lectures for just AN people who we know are dedicated and care and respect the lecturers?
Probably not feasible, but on a serious note, agree a lot with what you've said here. It's not fair to students who want to learn or the lecturers for students to take up seats in fully booked lectures and just disrupt it. It's honestly so disrespectful for everyone. I had friends who really wanted to go to the chem lecture but it was booked out and there were people in the room who took out laptops and were on Facebook and talking even after Thushan asked them to stop. It's not the lecturer's job to make sure everyone is listening and it wastes everyone's time when they have to keep stopping to shut everyone up. If you aren't interested, just don't go.

I agree about charging for lectures, it is an effective way to restrict the students who attend, but maybe mid years shouldn't be half price for newcomers?? Just a thought, I don't really see why they should be because the value of the unit 4 lecture isn't any less than unit 3, and as the notes are worth more than $5 to anyone, maybe it isn't the most effective method? Either way, considering it, this might not be practical in actually running the lecture.. We could suggest AN members only get discounts  :P Although I want to say, it isn't up to us to decide what the money goes towards. It should continue going to whatever the money made from lecture notes has been going to, and what the company decides to do is their privilege.

Just another opinion, but maybe make the revision lecture free and open to everyone (without the notes included though?). I don't know, these are all just my ideas.

Just to clarify, I love what AN does for us all, it's really considerate of them to offer us so much for free, knowing that students can't/don't want to spend so much money on this stuff and like every other company takes advantage of this, and I know that's something they're proud of and it sets them apart and above other lectures. I understand that some might take advantage of that, but if there is any other way to get only dedicated students to attend without having to charge for it, please can we try to do that (hate to say it, but like running lectures only for AN students  ::) ). I think because it's free people don't understand the true value it has, so if this could I don't know, be means tested in any feasible manner, I think the lectures could be so much more successful and have greater benefit to those who actually want it.

**disclaimer, these are just some of my opinions, I'm not suggesting that everyone outside AN is disrespectful or doesn't deserve an opportunity this great, I'm just saying that no one deserves to have such opportunities ruined by people who don't care. Also not saying anyone should heed these ideas, as mentioned by qazser, they're just suggestions! Thanks again to everyone involved in running these lectures though :)

I meant headstart would be $20 b/c of the set of notes provided. Mid year would be half price because they won't be any notes b/c already given notes in headstart

Ahh okay makes sense. I just know that some subjects (science mostly I think) have separate notes for U3 and U4 so I don't know how practical that is. Considering the options, AN has done an awesome job of working out how to make this system work!

Off-Topic: just out of curiosity, how did these people know about the lectures then?

How can you judge someone? I mean how can you tell if they are dedicated or not? (you can't exactly judge a book by it's cover  :P)

-An excuse to go out with your mates whilst "pretending" to do something educational
