Can I do masters in a different field to my bachelors?

Not sure if this works, but I heard from one of my cousins studying overseas, that he majored something like electrical engineering but is now doing masters in the chemistry field.

So my question is if I want to master in something else later down the track, do I have to study the bachelors degree for that field again, of can I 'jump' into it?      e.g. Neuroscience major to genetics master?

Does this happen in Australia unis?

You can definitely do this. Just be wary of any prerequisites.

For example, an Arts student (at Monash) could technically do a Masters of Engineering so long as they complete Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus, along with some science units, as electives.

Not that I know of, no. So long as you meet any prerequisites, it shouldn't be a problem :)

Yes. As long as you fulfill the requirements. These could be some of the following:

- You have an equal or above required GPA/WAM
- You have completed the prerequisites
- Completion of admissions test (if required) such as the LSAT or GAMSAT with equal or above required score

Every uni has different requirements. Deakin BMBS requires a 6.7 GPA + 67 GAMSAT, but no prerequisites. You can do a Commerce degree, and still be eligible, as long as you have fulfilled the other requirements.

It's noteworthy that he'd still have to have sit the GAMSAT, which assumes a fair bit of scientific knowledge that he wouldn't get through a typical commerce degree.

Super happy to help! I was in the same situation, and I was so happy when I found this. My friend said he wanted to do 'Bachelor of Doctor' as a joke, and I googled it, and this came up. It's commencing this year which is pretty neat.

Yeah. I have to learn both Chem and Bio on my own. But its cool that I can watch monash lectures from unrelated subjects, all I need to do is get the homework and other sheets from someone. My brother is doing Chem I and Chem II next year, so that's great. I just need to find someone for Bio.

Yeap! We should do another meetup in O-Week or something, just like Bangali suggested.

When I walked into the lecture theatre for my course information session, it hit me that I'm in a new place, and that no one I know is going to be there with me. It would be great to meet all of you!
