Is there any student discounts for first year uni students for laptops.

Not too sure since I haven't had a look at discounts offered by various clubs at UoM but you can start here and have a look which may turn out something like this:
Student Union.

Otherwise you'll be looking at Education Stores such as Lenovo which offers laptops at a cheaper price too! Student Edge have some deals on laptops too (just search for technology).
