Hey - so this is asking you to explore how in the Tempest, the characters change their perspectives on certain ideas and issues based on the discoveries made. For instance, in the Tempest, from my knowledge of the text, Prospero's discovery of the importance of forgiveness alters and challenges his previous belief in revenge as the only way to solve issues. Those are the sort of examples you are looking for :)

Oh my goodness thank you so much!! That genuinely makes so much more sense when you word it that way and that is a good example for it too.
Appreciate the help  :)

Hello!

I am just preparing for my half-yearly exams, the topic is People and Politics and its Module C - The Crucible. I was wondering, once I write my essay, would it be possible to have it checked or marked by someone on this site? My english teacher can't mark it (obviously) and I wanted to know I'm doing the right thing.

Technique?

In Mrs Dalloway Clarissa's says how they "spoke of marriage always as a catastrophe"
would this be an example of a hyperbole?

Hey!

I know this question might be a bit subjective but I'll just ask to get a few opinions.

So I am doing a speech for Mod C: Art of Travel this week and I was wondering how many words you can approx fit into 3 mins or 3:30 mins AT MAX!

Is 500-550 words reasonable, or too much?

Thanks!!

Hey Emily
Now I'm definitely no expert in English but i can say that the word count for a 3 minute speech is around 500-550 but then again it depends on how fast you speak so timing it is the key rather than writing to a word limit like you would do in an essay. If you speak reasonably fast you could write up to 600 words but again only do this after timing your speech.
Hope this helps  :)

Hey guys,
Just a question on addressing essay questions with quotes in them. When we write our response, do we just show the relationship between the quote and our thesis or do we quote phrases of it in our response?

For example, the essay question is: “Yeats’ thought was profoundly dialectical; for nearly every truth he made or found, he also embraced a counter-truth.” (The Cambridge Introduction to Yeats). To what extent does your reading of Yeats’ poetry agree with this view?

In my introduction, I mentioned my thesis on how Yeats presents the vacillation between antithetical ideas to reflect his desire to understand the truth on humanity. Should I clearly mention that the statement is accurate to a great extent or is my thesis already addressing the quote?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't say that it is hyperbole, perhaps a tad of a stretch, but maybe hyperbolic word choice, which is like diet-hyperbole ;)

Hey! I agree with Sophie, you should time it!! 540 words is 180 words per minute, which is probably pushing it unless you are naturally a faster speaker (I personally am). I'd try to cap at 500, do a few timed runs, then add/subtract from there as you need to! :)

I tended to paraphrase the quote into my own ideas, particularly in the last sentence in the introduction! So something like:

Thus, it is clear how Yeats has crafted a "profoundly dialectical" perspective on human relationships in his poetry.

^^ Totally random sentence, but that's what I mean by paraphrase. Not saying it is what is right or that anything else is wrong, but it is what I always tended to do for questions like that ;D

Hey there,
Would I have to refer to the quote consistently throughout the essay or do I just include it in my introduction? Not entirely sure if my thesis on antithetical ideas is equivalent in explicitly referencing to the quote.

I would definitely either directly quote or paraphrase the quote in your introduction, to demonstrate that you are answering the question which is a vital part to any question.
The quote ultimately forms a part of the question, so in order to answer it sufficiently, I would say it must be a recurrent thread throughout your response.

Hey there,
Essays in general are expected to be 800-1000 words; of course, this varies with other subjects but in English, to do well, they're expecting 800 words minimum.

Just wanted to add, it's always quality over quantity. You need to answer the question in as much depth as you can, so that's why it's ~800 words - they expect a very thorough response.

If you are a very concise writer, you could probably get the just as higher mark with slightly less...But most people need at least ~800 words to answer the question properly in enough detail.  :)
