Hi guys, I am a current law / commerce student at ANU who is undergoing that sinking feeling that I will never have a job – and was hoping the good people on this forum could give me some advice about changing courses.
Firstly, I am mathematically and scientifically incompetent. Thats why I'm doing the degree I'm doing (I only got a 27 in VCE Methods just to contextualise the problem). Nor am I very smart despite my high ATAR – I'm just good at remembering information – and because of the education systems preference for rewarding diligence over intelligence – I did very well. I need to make a few decisions over the next couple of weeks:
Firstly, I need to choose a commerce major for next semester. Because of my desire to get a job I'm hesitant to choose HR, Management, Marketing etc. Really what I'm deciding between is Finance and Business Information Systems (but open to any suggestion). Can anyone distinguish which one a mathematically challenged individual is more likely to pass? And which ultimately has better prospects (a hard question I know)? I am willing to persevere, like I did to get above 25 in methods.
Secondly, Im about to die in law because its literally the most boring thing in existence and am considering quitting. However, if law would get me get a modest job as a solicitor or increase my employability as a commerce student I will carry on. Im not cut out to be a top tier law firm kid and I have accepted that.
Thirdly, I am considering picking up international relations to replace law. My logic is that if law wont get me a job at all, I might as well do another degree that wont get me a job that im at least interested in (im extremely interested in politics). Would such a degree at least be beneficial given I have a desire to get a job (one day) with the Australian Public Service?
Thanks and Kind regards,
A panicked student.
