Thoughts on doing Japanese a year ahead?

Hi,
I've been given the option to do Japanese year 9 and 10 in the same year (I'm in year 9 now). This means I'll have to do double the amount of work as others to complete the year 9 and 10 curriculum in the same year. I also need to get an average of 90%+ in all the assessments include year 10. If I am successful however, I will be eligible to do Japanese 1/2 a year early. Now I don't have any background in the language nor am I phenomenally good.. I'd say I'm around average but I can put the time and effort in to accelerate if I choose to.

Should I try it or just back out now?

I also just realised this is in the wrong subforum. Move it if you want

Questions you should ask yourself...

Do you intend to do Jap anyway?

Would you miss jap if you dropped it?

Do you like Jap?

Do you think you could do okay in Jap?

Do you think accelerating would have an impact on your Jap mark? Good impact or bad impact?

If you're doing really well in class currently, then definitely give it a go! Japanese 3/4 is not harder (content-wise) than 1/2, just the workload is a bit heavier in terms of doing heaps of oral practise/written essays.
It's great because then you don't have to deal with a LOTE in yr 12 (which is very stressful since you gotta juggle 4 other subjects with it). Doing a time-consuming 3/4 is really good in yr 11 because you can afford to put more time into it, and do better :)

Well, that's just my opinion, but maybe discuss with your Japanese teacher too, if he/she thinks you ought to give it a shot, then go for it :D

Generally with any opportunities for extension or acceleration, I'd say take it.
You say "or should I just drop it now" — why not give it a shot, and if it really isn't what you want, just drop it later.
There's nothing locking you into doing it, so just take it in your stride with the reassurance that you may rid yourself of it later.
Year 9 and 10 Japanese isn't so strenuous so if you study diligently you should be fine.

If you end up doing it, make sure they give you enough classes and support — that's their end of the bargain.
Good luck
