MHC Markers (Immune System)

Hey guys, so I'm doing 3/4 Bio right now and the whole MHC markers deal just confused the heck out of me. Is there really a difference between Class 1 &2 Markers besides the fact that macrophages, B cells and T cells have both of them? And if there is, is it an important aspect of the unit?

Thank you!

Yes, there are important differences.

MHC class I molecules present proteins sourced from inside the cell that's presenting. They therefore provide the immune system a window of sorts to look inside a cell. Only cytotoxic T-cells recognise MHC class I molecules.

MHC class II molecules present proteins sourced from outside the cell that's presenting. These cells uptake antigens by phagocytosis and then present them on MHC class II molecules. Only helper T-cells recognise MHC class II molecules.

These are the functional differences. Structurally there are differences between the proteins too. They are also coded for by different loci (i.e. genes/alleles/whatever you like really!)

Sorry, do you guys know the structural differences between MHC I and MHC II?

Well there's this post from years back, let me see if I can pull it up..

Wait so the cells which present antigens are the ones with MHC 2 markers right?

From what I know, you're correct.
