Hello,
Here is my introduction and 1st and 2nd paragraphs. The essay is not finished, but feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Eilis change in character is demonstrated to be finally useful and fruitful. Discuss.

From beginning to end, Colm Toibin’s ‘Brooklyn’ reveals the life of Eilis Lacey and her struggle to find and reveal her identity. From Enniscorthy to America, Lacey’s character transforms and changes, which in turn proves to be useful and fruitful. Toibin’s vague but descriptive language, shows the slight alterations in Eilis proving her to become a confident character despite her timid and shy beginning. Eilis independence is also exposed by the writer towards the end portraying the change from her life where decisions and challenges were faced and answered by her family and friends. The new individual which Eilis became, allows her to make the crucial decisions in her life, which allows her to keep to her values and promises.
The quiet and timorous character revealed by Toibin in the beginning reveals Eilis’ inability to live her life to the fullest, and recognise the troubles and problems in life. As a result of this inability, Eilis character is futile. At the beginning of ‘Brooklyn’ Eilis recognises Rose’s presence in ‘silence,’ this silence continues throughout her time in Enniscorthy proving her to be submissive and unable to become a leader as Rose is in the Lacey family. Even when her trip to Brooklyn is organised by Father Flood and other senior people in Eilis’s life, she feels that Rose should go and that it would be a ‘waste’ if she accepted the opportunity. This timid character proves her to be insignificant and of little use to other people. However upon her new beginning in America, Eilis is forced to become more confident as she is forced to reveal her values in areas such as race and love. Despite knowing what Rose’s thoughts would be on Tony, she informs her of Tony and refuses to be ashamed of him. Again Eilis has to ‘serve the black people,’ resulting in division between Eilis and others from Mrs Kehoe’s residency. Eilis stay’s strong and refuses to let others thought hinder her equal and fair mind. This bolder character which Toibin carefully reveals, portrays how the new Eilis is beginning to become useful and fruitful. Towards the end, Eilis boldly decides to return to Brooklyn, this decision reflects that her character has become even more fruitful and that she is standing true to her values and to herself.
Throughout the beginning, Eilis timid character has further consequences on her ability to make decisions in her life. Her dependence on others to make these fundamental decision in her life, shows her inactive participation in life. Rose made many decisions for Eilis mainly including her trip to Brooklyn which she had organised ‘so precisely.’ Following this decision Eilis meekly follows, portraying the extent to which she let others live her life. Even when she arrives in America others continue to help and guide her through their decision making. Despite beginning to take some responsibility for her life, Father Flood ‘organises night classes’ for Eilis to provide encouragement. Without these decisions made for her, Eilis would have struggled more and not reached the level of satisfaction which she reached in America. Even throughout her relationship with Tony, she allows him to ‘move faster than she’ was. Her weakness to stand up to Tony and face reality, resulted in many hard decisions later on in life. However, on her return to Enniscorthy, Eilis begins to make decisions for herself, allowing her to become more fruitful and useful as she makes the biggest decision in her life. This new character exposed, helps her stick to her values and become a more valuable person.
