General Questions About the UMAT...

Hey everyone!

So I'm thinking about doing the UMAT in Year 12 next year. I just had a few questions about it that hopefully someone can answer! :)
1. How is the UMAT scored? Do you achieve a percentage mark, or a grade (A, B+), or something else? Do you get a mark for each section or just an overall mark?
2. What is considered a good UMAT score to get if I wanted to get into Melbourne or Monash Medicine?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hey :)
When you get umat scores, you get given section scores, so a score for section 1,2,3 and then an overall score which is literally just
your scores for each section averaged. I don't think anyone really knows how these scores are calculated besides ACER. After that, you get given a percentile :)

Have a look at this really awesome thread: UMAT and Undergrad Entrance Resources, Information and Links
it will help the questions you have asked :)

Hi :)

I should just add that the Melbourne MD is not an undergraduate degree -- that is, you get in after undertaking a three year degree which satisfies certain prerequisites, and taking the GAMSAT, which is a test.

Yep, only Monash offers an undergraduate med program within victoria.

As for what makes a good score, it really depends year to year, and to be honest ACER doesn't reveal a whole lot on the scoring process. A competitive mark is usually 90%ile+ however, anything from 65th%ile upwards makes you eligible granted a (really) good atar.

What would be considered a really good ATAR?
Also, if I wanted to do Medicine at Melbourne Uni, would it take longer than doing it at Monash Uni since I would have to wait till I finished my undergraduate degree to do medicine? What would I do as an undergraduate degree to get into postgraduate medicine?

Thanks again!! :D

What's a good ATAR really depends on your UMAT score and your interview score as well. I've heard people with around 96 getting into med, yet I've also heard of people with ATARs above 99 missing out. Certainly you'd be aiming for high 90s to be comfortable of a chance.

Doing med at Melbourne takes a year longer. You can do any undergraduate degree, but for Melbourne you need to complete approved subjects in Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology. Deakin, which also runs a postgraduate MBBS, doesn't require you to take any prerequisite subjects.
For post-graduate med you have to take a test called the GAMSAT, which is like the UMAT but worse. Rather than your ATAR score, they consider your scores at University. There is also an interview.

For the purpose of this question, im going to assume you are referring to a "good atar" in order to obtain an interview. Just because the conversation becomes quite convoluted if you are talking about actually getting an offer to study med, since there are a whole host of complicating factors.

In order to obtain an interview for monash med at an undergraduate level, you generally need to balance your UMAT and ATAR. What i mean is something like this:

- Someone who gets a 99 or 100 UMAT will probably score an interview with anything (roughly) 96 and above for their ATAR.
- Someone who gets something between 65-80 UMAT is probably looking at 99+ (if not high 99's) ATAR to score an interview.

It's a complicated process to say the least and i generally recommend not stressing too much about the semantics of the selection process. Assume you need to perform exceptionally regardless of your circumstance and try to obtain the best marks you can. :)

Thanks so much guys! This is really helpful!

Say if I wanted to get into Monash's Bachelor of Biomedical Science, would I need to do the UMAT? Or, a better question would be, which courses would you need to do a UMAT to get into?

You only need UMAT for Undergraduate Medicine, hence Undergraduate Medicine Admission Test. Biomed at Melb and Monash is not undergraduate Medicine and you cannot do much with it unless you get into graduate med afterwards.
2015- Methods (46)
2016- Spec (42), Chem (43), Bio (41), Eng Lang (36), MUEP Maths (4.5) ATAR: 99.25
2017- Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Monash

Technically this isn't strictly true. UMAT is required for a few other health science based courses in Victoria and Interstate (including Dentistry, Optometry and Physiotherapy) Each uni/course has different requirements and a lot of them don't require UMAT so i'd advise checking with each degree first.

As for biomedicine, no UMAT needed, and my thoughts on this degree echo most others. It's quite restrictive in the options it gives you and you have just as much chance of being selected into postgrad med studying science. The only real exception to this is the Monash pathway which is a broader topic in itself i guess.
