Here is a sample introduction and body paragraph for:
What is the importance of holding onto a dream? Discuss.John Steinbeck's novella "Of Mice and Men" explores the idea of the American Dream, as many of its central characters search for a better life. Set during the Great Depression, the lives of the itinerant farm workers seem pointless. Dreams are important to hold onto as they provide purpose, along with a sense of belonging and hope. Throughout the text, Steinbeck shows the negative and positive elements of holding onto dreams.
Dreams are an important element in escaping a harsh reality, despite the devastation it may bring. Curley's wife is representative of many women who suffered during the Great Depression, due to the inequality amongst genders. Curley's wife - who is the boss' daughter in law - has a dream of becoming an actress and "being in the pitchers". She is unhappy with life; and consequently, seeks company to cope with her loneliness, even though the workers deem her a "tart". Holding onto her dreams of the past, she constantly discusses how she "coulda been in the movies, an' had nice clothes." By reminding herself that she could have been something more – something extraordinary – she doesn’t have to take any personal responsibility for her choices. She knows she will never be an actress; but the concept of the American Dream drives her to strive for hope. The dream where "soon's he got back to Hollywood, he was gonna write me about it" conveys how her unrealistic dreams drove her to seek happiness despite the loneliness she faces. Dreams are important, however, can be problematic for people who want to achieve them.
