Choosing electives/briefing & O-week

Before the day that all students officially start uni, is there a thing called orientation week that briefs the students on choosing electives, what they will need for uni, what textbooks are required, what tutes/labs are etc.?

I might study interstate so I have to get a few priorities sorted and make sure I have booked travel plans out of state etc.

Thanks =]

O-week (the O stands for orientation) is officially the first week of uni, but you don't have any classes. It's when you line up for your student card, talk to subject advisors about enrolment, enrol in classes, etc etc. There's also lots of events organised throughout the week for students to meet each other - all the clubs and societies are out in force trying to recruit people too.
They're not going to actually tell you anything about textbooks, tutes/labs and so on - that'll be in the first lecture of each subject.
If you're going to an interstate uni, then you'll probably be at a hall of residence, and their accommodation contract usually starts the Saturday of O-week (i.e. two days before O-week, really).
