Your sixth subject will contribute an extra 10% of that study score to your "aggregate", which is what is used to determine your ATAR. So if you scored a 30 scaled in your sixth subject, for example, an extra 3.0 would be added to your aggregate. You can find the 2016 aggregate to ATAR table here. The extra 3.0 could be the difference, for example, between a ~70.00 and a ~73.00, or a ~90.00 and a ~91.00.

Regarding studying the sixth subject, have you considered Distance Education? :) Before that, though, it's probably best to consider whether or not studying that sixth subject will actually be worthwhile. What subjects are you thinking about taking? :)

i'm doing six this year, technically. idk if it's what you're after, or even if your school will allow it, but you could always apply for a university subject and do that in conjunction with year twelve? it adds an increment (up to 5.0) to your atar, and is arguably easier to achieve (though i'd imagine it varies in other subjects), but it can't be one of your four top subjects so you'd have to be confident in at least four other subjects. workload kind of depends on what you're taking, but i've found it generally much easier than my year twelve work (or much less content heavy, to be exact).

otherwise i'd agree with joseph. it probably won't make a ridculous difference to your atar, considering it's only a max. 5.0 addition but you'll have to split your time between six subjects instead of five. but if you do want a sixth subject at vce level, distance ed is pretty great. (:

Thankyou @joseph41 My subjects are :Biology,Chemistry,Physics,Mathematical Methods,English and Psychology..

I am going for Medicine but I am not sure whether I should do a sixth subject or nor because five subjects is a lot of pressure and with a sixth subject I might not be able to concentrate well...I want to drop either Psychology or Physics for grade twelve but I am not sure which one to drop!On the other hand the difference a sixth subject makes to your ATAR worries me..

P.s And should I take part in extra curricular too because I am more of a bookish person. Will not taking part disadvantage me later on?If yes can anyone recommend some good suggestions!

I'd recommend doing 6 subjects if you want to get into medicine. At the top end it's very competitive and every 0.05 ATAR increase can give you a better shot at getting in. Even if you don't put in a huge amount of effort into your 6th subject and get ~30, it will still help a lot.

Extra-curricular activities are useful and satisfying although I'd recommend doing them more in uni than VCE.

as others have said for medicine at least 6 subjects is essential.
If you are a strong student I would propose having a shot at a uni extension subject - I can't speak for the other subjects but I did Chemistry at Monash uni at it was relatively easy to get a good score in. Although they will only count as a 10% subject I ended up with a 4.5 increment (just missing out of 5 increment). My friends and I basically crammed for the exams and everyone got 4.5+ so it takes substantially a less amount of time for 4.5 in this than say 45 in psychology.

For reference you get
4.0 for a 70-79 average
4.5 for a 80-89 average
5.0 for 90+ average
I would be surprised if anyone from roughly 60 students who did it got less than a 4.0 with the majority getting 4.5
