Where and when should I apply for Christmas Casual Jobs ?

Hi everyone

As the title suggests, I was just wondering who the major employers were for christmas casual jobs and when I should apply for those positions. I realise we're quite far away from christmas atm but I thought I'd be prepared.

Cheers

I'd assume it's similar in Victoria as it is in NSW - Kmart. When I used to work there, the influx of new employees around Christmas was insane.

Hey,

The big retail stores like Big W, Kmart, and Target will always hire some Christmas casuals.

Have a look at local restaurants and pubs. They'll typically hire a few more casual dishwashers from Christmas up until the end of summer (especially if you're in a touristy area).

Thanks for the quick replies.

Do you know if these Christmas casual positions are usually advertised online or would I have to go in-store and hand in my Resume & Cover Letter.

Cheers

They may be advertised, but I'd say going in-store and handing in your resume/cover letter would be more effective (if you know someone who works there too that is always a bonus - at the kmart I worked at, if you even mentioned another employees name they'd pretty much hire you then and there haha).

Yep, I've seen a tonne online. They might also have signs outside the shop.

For pubs/restaurants, it's more of a who-you-know kind of thing, but no harm done by going there in person and handing in your resume. Most places also give you a free meal (+ drinks) every shift too.

+1 to what the others have said :)

Depends on the company, but a lot start hiring around August/September sort of time. Most companies these days advertise online, but the smaller businesses, restaurants, etc. tend to advertise in their shop front or even on Facebook. Check out websites like seek, etc. :)

Cotton On take on Christmas casuals - and a lot of Jewellery shops do too, especially names like Pandora!

Hey hey :) August is a good time (many larger companies start recruiting in August-September). Don't leave it to October before starting - I did and it wasn't fun. I was extremely fortunate to end up finding a job lols :P

Similar question, if I'm 17 and have no paid experience, do I have a chance of getting hired? At this point I don't even care how much pay I get, just that I can get a foot in the door with employment after spending the past three years procrastinating and finally deciding to leave it until after the HSC.

Will the nefarious penalty rate cuts give a shmuck like me who's late to the casual experience game and has a higher minimum wage than an equally useless 15 year old any more chance than I would have had before?

You definitely have a chance. It's probably more common than you think to start work around 17. Just make sure you apply everywhere -- you're not in a position to be overly picky. As long as you can sell yourself and you're willing to learn, you should be right! You just have to be patient -- even for someone more qualified, it can be tough finding a job.

You're definitely in with a chance!
There are actually a number of places that prefer to hire people that are a few years older - more maturity, etc. :) Retail tends to be like this.
I got my first retail gig at the start of year 12, so like, you're definitely not too late.

Christmas casual positions are great for getting your foot in the door, because they expect people with little or no experience to apply and these positions really are made for people with hardly any experience. Just do up your resume, apply to heaps and heaps of places, and you'll hopefully get an interview then a job - it took me heaps of applications to get my first job, but it happened eventually!

I only have experience in retail, but have friends who have worked in restaurants, and it seems like these can almost be easier to get a job in as they usually don't have the online application process, etc. and if you present yourself well when you walk in, you're increasing your chances of getting the job :)
If you can do stuff like RSA, or some small qualifications to increase your chances, then that's even better.

Thanks for the advice! And yeah I'll definitely look into getting an RSA once I turn 18. I get super jealous whenever my dad talks about getting work as a bartender with no experience in uni (and being able to afford to move out  ::). Oh how times change.

You don't have to be 18 to do an RSA! Or at least, not in Victoria :)
Yeah, times have changed. But once you get your foot in the door and get some experience, it's so much easier to get jobs, believe me :)
