Hi Jamon! I have a LS essay assignment coming up, and its on the Global Environmental Protection option, I was wondering if I should include a definition of global environmental protection in my essay, and if I should include it, where would be the best place to put it.

Thank you! :)

Hey Angie, welcome to the forums!! ;D I didn't study this Option, but you normally shouldn't include definitions in your essays, the markers knows them already after all! Your assignment might have slightly different requirements though so best ask your teacher to be sure ;D

Hi Jamon!
I've got my Paper 1 and 2 this Monday and Tuesday. Just wondering how you prepared for it and how do you prevent your hand from hurting/straining during the two hour limit? I've been writing one practice essay for each day this week for 40 minutes. But haven't actually timed myself for the two hour limit. Is it too late to start now?

Hey there!! So basically, there is no way to stop your hand hurting during the 2 hours - It will probably hurt. You just have to grit your teeth and keep going. We do have a bit of a guide on improving your handwriting speed and comfort though, you can read it here :)

So incredible you have been doing practice essays! That is fantastic stuff, and it is exactly how I prepared for Paper 1 and 2, just with practice (sounds like you are doing more than I did though!) ;) If you do a whole paper even just once over the weekend I think that will really benefit you, definitely not too late to be super beneficial. The practice you've already done is incredible though - Great work! ;D

Quote
How did you prepare for the unseen texts for paper 1?

Yet again, just practice! We've also just released a guide on this section of the exam just today, you can read that right here!

Quote
Also I currently have an internal mark of 73% for one of my subjects, is it still possible to get in the Band 5/6 range by the end of the year?

Absolutely! Strong performance in HSC and Trials would definitely get you there. You can read about how your marks are calculated here for a greater insight, but basically, the HSC exam is paramount. A strong performance there would easily get you into that Band 5/6 range ;D

hey jamon,
my question is not directly hsc related.
i am interested in doing engineering in uni, but i'm not sure which one to go for (eg. mechanical, biomedical, electrical, chemical etc)
can you give a bit of insights and overview into these faculties, and your advise?
thank you in advance

Hey there!! That's okay, I like the change up ;) I don't know a heap about anything but Electrical - In terms of Electrical, it is a lot of maths and physics. Make sure you enjoy those things at a minimum! All Engineering streams have a fair bit of math but electrical engineering would have the most of the lot. Lots of programming, lots of circuit building and doing finicky measurements. Happy to discuss it in more detail if you like, send me a message any time!

Can't help much with the others. In honesty, your best bet is to go to the Open Days that are coming up in August and September, and chat to students who do the degrees, and go to the lectures they offer that run through what the degree will teach you! That's where I picked Electrical, and it is the best place to make the decision, after chatting to people in the thick of it ;D you can also google course outlines for courses!

EG-"unsw electrical course outline"

Read what pops up to see the sorts of courses you'll do! Even the titles can indicate how interesting it will be to you :)

Hi Jamon.
What technique do you recommend in terms of tackling the physics papers. What order do you recommend and why?
Also I am having trouble with long responses, I know the content well, but am not able to put it clearly into words for 4 and 5 markers and even beyond them.
Thanks

Hey! So I did the Physics Exam in order - The multiple choice worked well for me as a warmup, to get myself on a bit of a roll! And from there I just thought, "Might as well do the rest in order!" because I found the Core and the Option to be of similar difficulty. As always I'd leave questions I didn't understand immediately until last, to maximise the efficiency of my time ;D

Long responses are all about practice - Try to dot point your responses before you write them! So, when you see a 5 marker on black body radiation, list in your head the main points you want to cover. Do this BEFORE you start so you can plan your response and have a better chance of hitting all your key markers. Practice makes perfect here ;D

I wrote this set of Topic Tests which might help here! Not intentionally trying to sell you something at all (I only link it when I honestly think it will help), but this is a cool resource, because it shows you exactly how I'd answer a long response question (including my own handwritten response to it), and a bit of a breakdown of how to approach it. Worth a look, at least ;D

My legal trials are on monday and my teacher has hinted at a compliance/non-compliance question for the crime essay. I have 4 points (police powers, bail, trial process and punishment)
This is what I've planned so far:
...
What do you think? :)

Hey! On a quick read it looks good to me, arguments seem well organised and thorough!! If you need further help with it over the next few days be sure to visit our Legal Studies Question Thread! ;D

Hey Jamon, thanks for this Q&A! Got a few questions and I'd appreciate if you could answer 'em.

Sure thing!

Quote
1) So I'm currently in Year 10 and people have told me the transition to Year 11 is massive for all contents (Science especially), is this true? I'm doing all three Sciences (Phys, Chem and Bio) next year and MX1, so how can I prepare now to make sure I don't fall behind next year? Does the Math content also have a drastic change in difficulty from Year 10 content or does it just build on past content? Do Math classes have some sort of revision on a topic when they start a new topic (i.e. go over Year 10 basic knowledge in the first lesson to start off the new topic)?

So, yes, the jump in difficulty and workload is pretty big from Year 10 to Year 11. However, don't do anything to prepare yet - Way too early. Year 11 isn't super important, so really, just don't do anything before you start, and go in ready to work! Just pay attention in Math so you go in with a good base of knowledge :)

The Math difficulty is significantly harder, but it does build on current content (you'll revise it briefly as well) :)

Quote
2) How different is Year 11 content compared to Year 12? This question is mainly applied to MX1 and the three sciences. Does the content change drastically or does it build on?

It will build on, but there will be new things too! Most of what you learn will be either somewhat or completely new to you :)

Quote
3) Does MX1 have content (questions) similar to the AMC (Westpac) competition or is it more based off classwork content?

I have no clue what that competition is, aha! But again, it builds from content you've done in Year 9 and 10, so that's a good indicator (note that your Math syllabus won't change, advanced math changes got delayed until 2020) :)

Quote
4) They're changing the syllabus for 2019 HSC students, have you had a look at it? If so, do you think the Science and English courses will be harder? Some people told me it'd be much harder, but others have said it's easier. Don't really know who to believe. And also, will past HSC papers come in handy if the syllabus is all changed or are we going to have to rely on without doing past papers?

I have, I like the changes! For Physics (the one I know in detail) the approach is more mathematical and more rigorous, I think most people will find it a little harder. It isn't actually harder though - Just different (more like Physics is done in university) :)

Some of the courses will be substantially different so past papers will be a little useless - But we'll likely be provided with sample exams from NESA to use for prep ;D

Quote
5) Are trials harder than the actual HSC exam itself? Do schools let you keep the trials paper for practice?

Yes, but because there are more exams in a shorter period of time with less time for preparation - Not because the exam itself is measurably harder :) most schools will let you keep your paper I'd imagine!

Just a note, you are in Year 10, you shouldn't be stressing about Trials yet! Try not to get too invested in things this far out, you'll lose all your energy too early ;D

Quote
6) I heard there's a creative writing section in the English Advanced papers. Personally, I'm not a fan of creative writing. How do I make sure I do well in that section of the test? Is there a good structure I can follow? Also, how many essays do you have to write in the English Advanced papers, will there also be a comprehension section?

I'm not totally down with exactly how your new English Exam will be structured, but there will be Creative writing to be done in your HSC. We have a bit of a guide on it you can read right here. Again though, you'll be given heaps of opportunities to develop your Creative writing skills in Year 11 and 12, no need for undue stress just yet! :)

As for the number of comprehension sections and essays, I'm not totally sure sorry! I think it will be similar to what we do now (4 essays, 1 comprehension, 1 creative, in 2 sets of 2 hours), but slightly different with the new syllabus! :)

Quote
7) Last question (I promise). Do the HSC English exams only ask you to use quotes from books and such? If that's the case, does it mean you have to memorise several different quotes from each book or does it only rely on 1 book? If not, how many books do you need to quote from? Will we use the STEEL (or TEE) paragraphs for essays or do they expect a different style of structure for the essays? What do you think would get the highest marks (teacher told me markers get bored of seeing STEEL paragraphs).

You'll have a few (3 or 4) modules in English, each of which could have one or more texts, and you'll need to memorise quotes from all of them. Essay writing is a little different but will still be based loosely around the PEEL idea ;D

It's cool you are thinking about all of this! But if you want my honest opinion, you are considering all this stuff wayyy too early. You are literally 28 months away from your HSC exams - It is great to be prepared but getting super invested super early could do more harm than good! Don't be afraid to go with the flow a little in Year 11, make some mistakes - You don't need to do anything to prepare before your first day of Year 11. Work hard in Year 10, and forget about this stuff until it is a little closer, at least in my opinion ;D

Hi Jamon!
2 (more) things;
- In regards to legal, is it beneficial to structure notes around themes and challenges as well as content? Currently I just have content but the themes and challenges are so relevant to most questions! Do you have themes and challenges notes where the content has been applied?
- Any predictions on what the family question will be? I hear that CSSA tries to predict the HSC exam questions

Thank you!

Hey!! Lucky last! ;D

- This is definitely beneficial! It is not something I did super well, in honesty, I only really focused on the Offenders/Victims/Society one for my Notes, I should definitely have done the others too. The notes I had for my essays for Crime are here, to see what I mean. Do better than me and include the others! ;)

- Hmm, I wouldn't be surprised if law reform made an appearance in the Family Law section, or perhaps a question on the Care and Protection of Children (which I don't think has been asked in a bit?) It is a little hard to tell because last year they asked surrogacy, which was the last remaining contemporary issue, so we are in a bit of an unknown period right now ;D
