Commerce Atar

Hello forum users,

Just out of curiosity I thought I would ask for some clarification. Here https://futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/2341657/Commerce.pdf and also in other places, it indicates that a domestic student is guaranteed a place in the commerce degree in 2018 if they achieve an ATAR of 95 and above.

However in the same places it also suggests that places will be allocated based on the  highest scoring applicants-- which makes sense, and to my understanding forms the "clearly in" ATAR for the year. So, how can they make any guarantees if there are (presumably) limited spaces?

Kind regards,

Eventful

Hi there :)

If you scroll down to page 23 of the booklet you linked, you'll find in the fine print:
Quote
The Clearly-in Rank may be higher, depending on demand for the course and the number of places available.

The clearly-in is most likely indicative only, and entry is based on the amount of space available. However, you'll find that the clearly-in generally doesn't change too much each year, unless something has happened e.g. the course somehow becomes really popular compared to the last year.

They can't make any guarantees, in fact no university can set a clearly in ATAR for next year.
I think you misread the clearly in rank on pg 23, where it says Domestic Students: 2017 Clearly-in Rank .
They usually don't change, but it is possible for it to.

But to answer your question on how they make any guarantees if there any (persumably) limited spaces?
Is basing it off your ATAR, Not everyone who gets an ATAR score of 95+ will do this course and even then Melbourne university has large cohort of students for these degrees. So that is how they guarantee it.

I could be wrong in my assessment, but that is how universities like Melbourne that have these schemes work.
Jack of all trades, master of none.
Hence why i'm in all these different threads and boards.

If you look on the second page; as well as, the bottom of page 23 you will see in reasonably sized boxes: "If you’re a domestic student, satisfy course prerequisites and achieve an ATAR of 95.00 or above, you will be guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Commerce in 2018". It might even say this on other pages, but those two are noticeable.

This is what I am referring too in regards to conflicting information. Thank you for the replies thus far.

commerce is one of the few degrees with a pre-set guaranteed entry atar for domestic students. if you get 95+ you are guaranteed in next year and that's that. if there is a huge surge in the people who want to do commerce, then international  full fee paying students get less spots so locals can get in.

Thank you for the clarification Spectroscopy. Do you have any more information on why that is. I ask because besides the boxes in the pdf and what you said I have not heard about this anywhere else . I do take your word for it, I'm only asking out of interest. Does this have something to do with the government? Does it only apply at Melbourne University? Thank you once more.

the only course I know of that does this in the country is the bachelor of commerce at Melbourne uni. its definitely not a government thing and its probably just the uni choosing to do it for this course. none of Melbourne unis other bachelors degrees have the same thing, if you look at the other bachelors degrees entry information they use language that says stuff like "Lowest ATAR where a recent Year 12 student offer was made in Semester 1 2017 (excluding students made offers through special entry schemes)" etc. I have no idea why they do it differently for commerce.
